Mechanical Design Engineer

TQR Plymouth is recruiting for a skilled Design Engineer to join a well-established engineering business entering an exciting new phase of growth. Following a recent acquisition by a global industry leader, the company is expanding its reach both geographically and market sectors — making this a fantastic time to join.

The Role:

This is a hands-on, site-based role (100% on-site in Newton Abbot) focused on low-volume, high-variation bespoke design work — not mass production. You’ll be solving complex engineering challenges, tailoring solutions to meet specific customer needs, and working closely with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are practical and production-ready.

• Create detailed 2D/3D CAD designs (AutoCAD essential)
• Collaborate with Engineering, Sales & Manufacturing teams
• Deliver custom solutions with a strong focus on problem-solving and adaptability

What You’ll Bring:

• 3+ years’ experience in a design engineering role - candidates with experience in the marine sector required for the upper end of the salary range
• Strong CAD skills and a passion for solving technical challenges
• Proven experience in Design for Manufacture (DFM)
• Understanding of production processes and bespoke engineering
• Engineering qualification or equivalent experience
