A specialist engineering manufacturer is looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to support the design, development and continuous improvement of its products. You’ll contribute to new product development, create and maintain engineering documentation, and work with teams across the business to deliver reliable, manufacturable designs.
The role offers the chance to work on technically varied projects in a fast-paced environment, supporting customers in demanding sectors including defence.
WHY THIS ROLE STANDS OUT
* Work on mechanical products used in demanding defence and industrial environments.
* Take ownership of design work from early development through to manufacturing.
* Join a collaborative engineering team that shares ideas and supports continuous improvement.
* Help develop junior engineers and contribute to the future of the engineering team.
* Receive support for your professional development, alongside a 9.5% pension contribution.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING
* Support new product development projects, ensuring designs meet customer requirements, relevant standards, cost targets and deadlines.
* Produce 3D models, assembly drawings and detailed manufacturing drawings using approved CAD software.
* Carry out Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) to identify and reduce potential design risks.
* Ensure designs meet company standards, relevant regulations and engineering best practice.
* Maintain technical specifications, bills of materials, engineering change notices and design records.
* Prepare and present technical reports, design reviews, validation reports and root cause analysis findings.
* Contribute to project planning, tracking deliverables against schedules and milestones.
* Work with suppliers on materials, machining requirements, tolerances and manufacturing capabilities.
* Collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain and Sales to resolve technical challenges.
* Support and mentor junior engineers, contributing to team development and continuous improvement.
* Keep your technical knowledge up to date with relevant standards, regulations and industry developments.
WHAT YOU’LL BRING
* Experience in mechanical design and product development within manufacturing, production or a process industry.
* Experience using 3D CAD software and producing detailed manufacturing drawings.
* A sound understanding of engineering principles, materials, manufacturing processes and design for manufacture.
* Strong problem-solving, analytical, written and verbal communication skills.
* The ability to manage several projects and priorities effectively.
* A collaborative approach and an interest in sharing ideas and supporting the development of others.
Experience at a semi-senior level, typically around three to five years, would be beneficial. Professional registration or membership of IMechE, experience with DFMEA and design validation, and familiarity with valves, pressure equipment or fluid control are also desirable, but not essential.
WHAT YOU’LL GET
* A salary of £40,000–£45,000 per annum.
* A 9.5% pension contribution.
* Support for professional development.
* The opportunity to complete an individual ASME certification assessment, which typically takes around two months.
* A varied design role with exposure to manufacturing and defence projects.
