Role Overview
We're currently recruiting for an experienced Mechanical Manager to join our Client in Southampton. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced mechanical professional with strong leadership, estimating and project management skills to take responsibility for leading and developing a mechanical team.
The successful candidate will oversee mechanical maintenance, repair, fabrication, installation and modification works, ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently, commercially and to the required quality standards.
The role will involve a combination of team management, operational planning, estimating, client liaison and project delivery, making it an excellent opportunity for someone looking for a varied and senior mechanical position.
Key Responsibilities
Leading, managing and supporting the mechanical team across workshop, site and project activities
Planning and overseeing mechanical maintenance, repair, overhaul, installation and modification works
Preparing and reviewing estimates, quotations and project costings
Reviewing client enquiries, technical specifications, drawings and scopes of work
Identifying project requirements, risks, assumptions, exclusions and opportunities
Supporting operational planning, labour allocation and programme development
Monitoring projects against agreed budgets, programmes and quality standards
Liaising with clients, suppliers, subcontractors, project managers and internal teams
Supporting business development and maintaining strong client relationships
Ensuring all work is completed in accordance with company procedures, RAMS, permits and relevant health and safety requirements
Monitoring workmanship, productivity, quality and compliance
Supporting the training, development and performance of mechanical employees
Assisting with the control of tools, plant, equipment, materials and consumables
Ensuring employees have and correctly use the required PPE
Completing project, technical, quality and commercial reports where required
Identifying and reporting any issues that may affect safety, quality, resources or project delivery
Working independently and using initiative to manage and prioritise workload
Supporting emergency and responsive work requirements, including on-call activities when required
Candidate Requirements
Minimum 5 years' relevant experience within mechanical engineering, marine, ship repair, maintenance, construction or heavy engineering
Previous experience in a supervisory or management position
Strong estimating, quotation and project costing experience
Good commercial awareness and understanding of labour, materials, plant and subcontractor costs
Relevant mechanical engineering qualification, apprenticeship, trade background or equivalent experience
Strong knowledge of mechanical maintenance, repair, installation and modification
Ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics, diagrams, specifications and technical information
Proven experience supervising and managing personnel
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
Ability to motivate, support and develop employees
Client-facing and stakeholder management experience would be advantageous
Marine, dockyard, ship repair or heavy engineering experience would be highly desirable
Knowledge of confined spaces, hot works, lifting operations and permit-controlled environments would be advantageous
Willingness to travel when required
Full UK driving licence

Health and safety is a key part of this position. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that they and all employees under their control work safely and comply with relevant health, safety and environmental legislation and company procedures.
The role will include ensuring safe systems of work are followed, appropriate PPE is used and that accidents, incidents, near misses, unsafe conditions and quality concerns are reported promptly.
