Job Description - Medical Director

Rolesummary

Provideleadership, management, and governance of the clinical workforce and representpatients at the highest level in the organisation to ensure Independent HealthGroup deliver high quality, patient-centred care which meets the highest clinicalstandards and outcomes.

Main Responsibilities:

Clinical standards

Ensure Independent HealthGroup maintains the highest standards of clinical practice and governance.Monitor patient safety, clinical quality and encourage continuous improvement.

Develop a culture where allstaff evaluate the quality of patient care and able to challenge practice itthis is not being delivered.

Ensure clinical policiesand procedures, standard operating practice and clinical governancearrangements reflect the range of services provided by Independent Health Groupand are updated in response to service developments.

Champion the higheststandards of clinical care and good practice.

Medical Workforce

Provide leadership to the medical workforce, including coaching, supervision,and performance management of medical and clinical staff.

Ensure all medical and clinical staff have the skills and competence todeliver excellent patient centred care.

Ensure the organisationcomplies with organisational and governance requirements for revalidation andany doctors with a prescribed connection to Independent Health Group remain upto date and fit to practice.

To be the ResponsibleOfficer for revalidation of medical staff in accordance with Department ofHealth legislation ensuring that systems of clinical governance and appraisalare working and are appropriate for revalidation.

With the Head of HR, managethe performance of clinical staff including addressing any concerns.

To be actively involved inthe recruitment and selection of all medical staff in line with guidelines.

To undertake appraisals ofemployed surgeons in line with guidelines.

Governance and RiskManagement

Ensure there is a clinical governance structure in place with clearlines of accountability from the patient/clinic to the senior management teamand Board (ward to Board).

Work with the Chief Nurse to ensure services meet the highest standardsof clinical excellence, are appropriately governed and that risks areidentified and appropriately managed.

Fulfil the responsibilities as Responsible Officer for revalidation ofmedical staff.

Fulfil the role of Caldicot Guardian.

In partnership with the Head of HR, provide leadership to ensure fullcompliance with the Medical Practitioners Assurance Framework.

Create an environment where all staff and other workers feel able andsafe to raise issues or concerns, and where learning is shared across theorganisation.

At all times, act in a manner to safeguard the interests of individualpatients and their families and justify public trust and confidence in theorganisation.

Management and Leadership

As a member of the Board ensure that Independent Health Group meets its quality,activity, performance, and financial targets.

Champion qualityand patient care.

Role modelbehaviours to support Independent Health Groups vision and values.

Help create an environment in which high-quality cost-effective servicesare delivered, where innovation and continuous improvement are the norm and inwhich each member of staff is recognised and valued.

Actively support an inclusive multi-disciplinary approach to leadershipand team development, empowering others to work collaboratively to achievecommon goals and aims.

Raise and maintain the profile of the organisation through workingcollaboratively with colleagues in the health sector and developing strongexternal networks.

Contribute to the strategy and business planning annually, taking anactive role in the development of new services.

SafeguardingChildren

Everyone working forIHG regardless of the work they do has a statutory duty to safeguard andpromote the welfare of children. When children and/or their carers use ourservices, it is essential that all child protection concerns are bothrecognised and acted on appropriately. You have a responsibility to ensure youare familiar with and follow the child protection policies and procedures. Toensure you are equipped to carry out your duties effectively, you must alsoundertake mandatory child protection training and updates at the competencylevel appropriate to the work you do.

SafeguardingAdults

Everyone working for IHG regardless of the work they do hasa duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of vulnerable adults. When patientsand/or their carers use our services, it is essential that all protectionconcerns are both recognised and acted on appropriately. You have aresponsibility to ensure you are familiar with and follow IHG policies inrelation to safeguarding vulnerable adults. To ensure you are equipped to carryout your duties effectively, you must also undertake mandatory vulnerable adultprotection training and updates at the competency level appropriate to the workyou do.

Person Specification

Knowledge & Skills

  • Clinical and corporate governance frameworks.
  • Able to communicate effectively with people at all levels especially disseminating clinical information to a lay audience.
  • Excellent analytical/critical reasoning skills.
  • Coaching skills.
  • Self-motivated and able to work autonomously.
  • Willing and able to challenge.

Qualifications

  • Registered medical practitioner.
  • Formal training in leadership and management.
  • Continuous professional development as a senior leader.
  • Responsible Office training.

Experience

  • Leadership and management in a health care setting.
  • Working as part of a multi-disciplinary leadership team.
  • Development and delivery of clinical service improvement.
  • Job planning, appraisal, and medical governance.
  • Responsible Officer
