Job Description - Mental Health Solicitor

Our client is looking for a qualified solicitor or experienced caseworker to join their Mental Health team. In this role, you will manage a caseload of mental health matters, including advocacy before the First -tier Tribunal, attending Hospital Managers Hearings, and liaising with clients, professionals, and family members. You will also be responsible for reviewing medical records and ensuring clients’ rights are upheld under the Mental Health Act 1983.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Managing a caseload of mental health cases, including meeting with clients, conducting advocacy, and reviewing medical records

  • Corresponding with professionals, family members, and other stakeholders

  • Attending Tribunal hearings, Hospital Managers Hearings, and Care Programme Approach (CPA) meetings

  • Travelling to visit clients in hospitals, subject to Covid -19 risk assessments

  • Marketing and business development to raise the profile of the firm and expand its client base



Requirements

Essential:

  • A qualified solicitor, newly qualified or above, or an experienced caseworker

  • Holds the Law Society Mental Health Accreditation

  • Strong understanding of the Mental Health Act 1983, Tribunal Procedure Rules, SRA regulations, and legal aid contract requirements

  • Experience conducting advocacy and representing clients at Tribunal hearings.

  • Excellent client care skills with experience working with vulnerable clients.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Desirable:

  • Legal Aid Agency supervisor status in the category of mental health law

  • Experience with Court of Protection work

  • A valid driving licence
