Job Description - Mortgage Underwriter

Location - Leeds and Guildford
Purpose
You will be responsible for progressing mortgage applications from initial receipt through to mortgage offer. In making your decision, you will be involved in ensuring relevant information has been received about both the potential borrower and property to assess both meet MPowered’s criteria and are suitable for lending.

This is a varied role and requires good decision-making and communication skills whilst also needing individuals with an excellent eye for detail. In addition, the role will entail becoming familiar with digital lending and utilising the various technologies employed across the company's platform. Upon completion of your initial training the expectation is to achieve your initial mandate.

Who are we looking for?
While experience in the Residential Mortgage industry would be beneficial, we welcome candidates with various levels of mortgage experience, provided they possess a keen eye for detail and demonstrate enthusiasm and willingness to learn:
Previous experience of working within the mortgage industry with a strong underwriting background.
Proven ability to exercise good commercial and professional judgment.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
PC literate with a good knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Technical literacy, either a basic understanding of coding languages or the capability to learn them while on the job would be beneficial.
Previous exposure to automation and digital lending would be beneficial.
Based in commutable distance to our city centre Leeds office or Guildford office.

Job Role Accountabilities
Work to agreed objectives, service standards and deliverables.
Ensure relevant documentation and information received is checked for adherence to policy and criteria.
Deal with queries and enquiries effectively, accurately, and professionally, delivering excellent customer service.
Provide a prompt reply to all written correspondence.
Develop positive working relationships with colleagues.
Make suggestions for improvements to processes to enhance service and efficiency.
Adhere to internal/external compliance, credit review and audit requirements.
Apply all aspects of the desired consumer outcomes of Treating the Customer Fairly (TCF).
Use initiative to resolve queries outside own area of expertise.
Train and mentor new team members.
Take responsibility for your own learning and development.
All other associated duties and responsibilities and carry out any tasks as required by management.

Qualification, Skills, Knowledge and Experience

Qualifications
Essential Desirable
Underwriting experience Highest level of education A-level (or equivalent)

Skills and Knowledge
Mortgage Underwriting Principles; good level knowledge of mortgage underwriting principles and practices; including risk assessment and credit analysis.
Stay updated on changes in mortgage lending, regulations, and industry best practices.

Experience
Experience of working in a regulated mortgage lending environment.
Previous experience of assessing lending transactions in a mortgage underwriting capacity.
