Museum Collections Manager

Newly formed Heritage Team - this new hire will work directly alongside another Museum Assistant contractor

£20 - £24.67 per hr

Part time 2-3 days per week

36 month contract

Location: Portsmouth area

The Collections Manager acts as a guardian of the organisation's cultural heritage through the care and management of its museum and the objects held within it. You will be responsible for handling the condition of all museum objects; supporting the care, conservation and display of the collection. You will also be responsible for the environmental conditions of the museum and its stores; ensuring that the collections are maintained in the most appropriate conditions possible.

You will be joining a newly-formed Heritage Team, which is focused on modernising, transforming and professionalising how the organisation showcases its history and tells it stories. As part of this team effort, you will provide tours and talks to internal and external customers, using objects from the collection to bring our organisational history to life in innovative new ways.

Key responsibilities:

Museum maintenance, including environmental monitoring and pest management
Document and digitise the museum collection; cataloguing to SPECTRUM standard on the CMS
Work with the wider Heritage team to support wider objectives and goals, such as exhibition pop-ups and themed seasons
Provide tours and talks to customers, tailoring to different group requirements
Support new and innovative ways of showcasing the museum's collections, including through better use of audio-visual techniques and tools
Development of a museums collections policy
Engage with Events team to understand who we have in, and what tailoring is required
Recognised qualification in curation or conservation
Experience working with a range of materials (including metal, leather and wood)
Knowledge of SPECTRUM cataloguing standards
Experience using and embedding audio-visual tools within museums
