Job Description
Senior Engineer | Staffordshire
Salary: £47,000 – £50,000 per annum
Hours: Monday–Friday, day shift with flexibility and occasional weekend/overtime cover
Industry: Food Manufacturing
We are currently recruiting for an experienced Senior Engineer to join a busy and established food manufacturing operation.
This is an excellent opportunity for a technically strong, maintenance engineer who is ready to take the next step in their career. You will remain hands-on within the engineering team while taking a senior role in the day-to-day coordination of maintenance activities, providing technical support to other engineers and deputising for the Maintenance Manager when required.
Working closely with Production and Engineering, you will play a key role in maintaining plant reliability, reducing downtime and ensuring maintenance activities are completed safely, efficiently and to a high standard.
The Role
As Senior Maintenance Engineer, you will be responsible for keeping production equipment running reliably through effective preventative maintenance, rapid breakdown response and strong fault-finding capability.
You will act as a key technical point of contact within the engineering team, supporting less experienced engineers and helping to prioritise workloads to ensure production requirements are met.
The role will suit an experienced Maintenance Engineer, Senior Engineer or Engineering Team Leader who is looking to develop their leadership responsibilities while remaining actively involved in hands-on engineering.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance and respond effectively to equipment breakdowns.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical faults across a range of production equipment.
- Test equipment following repairs to ensure safe and reliable operation.
- Assist the Maintenance Manager with the daily coordination and prioritisation of engineering workloads.
- Prioritise breakdowns and planned maintenance activities in line with production requirements.
- Provide technical guidance, coaching and on-the-job support to less experienced engineers.
- Maintain accurate records of breakdowns, repairs, preventative maintenance and engineering activities.
- Support root-cause analysis and continuous improvement initiatives to reduce recurring breakdowns and improve equipment reliability.
- Work closely with Production and other departments to coordinate maintenance activities and minimise disruption.
Working Hours
- Monday–Thursday: 06:00–15:30 or 08:30–18:00, depending on shift allocation.
- Friday: 06:00–15:00.
- Flexibility and overtime will occasionally be required to support business needs.
- Weekend working may be required during peak production periods.
About You
We are looking for an experienced and technically capable maintenance engineer who can demonstrate strong electrical and mechanical fault-finding skills and is comfortable taking responsibility beyond their own workload.
You will ideally have:
- NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Engineering or an equivalent engineering qualification.
- 18th Edition qualification is desirable.
- Strong practical knowledge of both electrical and mechanical engineering.
- Previous experience within food manufacturing, FMCG or a fast-paced production environment.
- Experience diagnosing electrical faults and working safely on industrial machinery.
- The ability to read and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings.
- Good knowledge of motor control equipment, including overloads, contactors, variable speed drives and relays.
- Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
- Experience with planned preventative maintenance and maintenance planning.
- A good understanding of health & safety and food hygiene requirements within a manufacturing environment.
- Experience mentoring, coaching or supporting less experienced engineers.
- Experience prioritising breakdowns and maintenance activities within a production environment.
- The confidence and capability to step up and deputise for a Maintenance Manager when required.
What We Are Looking For
This is a senior hands-on engineering position, so you should be confident working independently, making decisions under pressure and taking ownership of engineering issues from diagnosis through to resolution.
You will be someone who can:
- Lead by example on the shop floor.
- Make sound technical decisions.
- Remain calm and organised during production-critical breakdowns.
- Communicate effectively with Production and Engineering.
- Develop and support other engineers.
- Identify opportunities to improve equipment reliability.
- Take responsibility when the Maintenance Manager is unavailable.
What We Offer
- £47,000 – £50,000 salary
- Permanent, full-time position.
- Monday–Friday working pattern.
- Opportunity to develop into a broader engineering leadership role.
- A hands-on position with genuine technical responsibility.
- The opportunity to work within an established food manufacturing operation.
- A role where your engineering expertise and leadership skills will have a direct impact on production performance.
