New Job: SEMH Mentor in Lewisham

Job Description - New Job: SEMH Mentor in Lewisham

Job Description

SEMH Mentor | Lewisham

Are you passionate about helping young people overcome barriers to education and considering a career in Psychology, Youth Work, Social Work or Teaching? This SEMH Mentor opportunity in Lewisham offers the chance to work with secondary-age pupils who need consistent, individualised support to re-engage with learning and build confidence.

This SEMH Mentor role is suited to someone who understands that behaviour is often a form of communication. You'll work closely with pupils who may experience anxiety, emotional regulation difficulties, low confidence or challenging behaviour, using positive relationships and structured mentoring to help them make sustainable progress.

Rather than simply managing behaviour, you'll become a trusted adult for pupils who may have struggled to engage with mainstream education, helping them develop the routines, resilience and self-awareness needed to succeed.

Full Academic Year | £500–£550 per week

What the school can offer an SEMH Mentor:

  • Dedicated mentoring time with identified pupils

  • Training in SEMH, emotional regulation and restorative practice

  • Experience working alongside pastoral and safeguarding teams

  • Opportunities to contribute to individual support plans

  • Exposure to behaviour strategies used across a secondary setting

  • Regular guidance from experienced pastoral professionals

  • Strong preparation for careers in Psychology, Social Work, Youth Work or Education

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Building consistent and professional relationships with pupils

  • Delivering 1:1 mentoring and wellbeing sessions

  • Supporting pupils to recognise triggers and develop regulation strategies

  • Encouraging positive engagement with lessons

  • Using restorative conversations following incidents

  • Liaising with teachers and pastoral staff regarding pupil progress

  • Helping pupils develop organisation, resilience and independence

The successful SEMH Mentor will:

  • Hold A-Levels or equivalent qualifications

  • Have a BA/BSc degree or relevant experience working with young people

  • Be calm, consistent and emotionally resilient

  • Communicate confidently with pupils and staff

  • Understand the importance of professional boundaries

  • Be genuinely interested in supporting young people with SEMH needs

If you are looking for an SEMH Mentor role where you can build meaningful relationships with young people and develop specialist experience before progressing into Psychology, teaching or pastoral work, this is an excellent Lewisham opportunity from September 2026.
