Operational Systems Support Engineer (OpenVMS)

Location: Prestwick (3 days per week onsite per fortnight)

Duration: 5 month contract

Role details:

NATS (National Air Traffic Services) are looking for an experienced Technical Engineer to support the delivery and maintenance of critical networking and communications projects within a complex operational environment. The role will focus primarily on supporting a portfolio of networking projects, requiring a blend of networking expertise, scripting capability, systems knowledge, and communications experience.

Key Responsibilities:

Supporting technical design and continual service improvement activities across operational systems
Working hands-on at system level while considering wider architecture, interfaces and dependencies
Supporting networking projects and identifying opportunities to improve system performance and resilience
Using scripting and troubleshooting skills to investigate technical issues and develop effective solutions
Analysing system and interface behaviour across complex or legacy operational environments
Working with IP networking, serial communications and associated technical infrastructure
Contributing to technically sound solutions within a safety-critical environment
Collaborating with designers, architects and engineers across the wider technical team
Identify improvement opportunities, understand system and interface behaviour and help develop technically sound solutions.

What we are looking for:

Strong understanding of IP networking principles.
Strong scripting skills, including PowerShell or comparable scripting languages
Understanding of complex or legacy operational systems and their interfaces
Experience with OpenVMS or other VMS environments would be particularly valuable
Ability to understand system architecture, dependencies and integration points
Experience with communications systems, including serial communications

Desirable skills:

Experience working in safety-critical, defence, security, air traffic management or similarly regulated environments would be advantageous
