Operational Technology (OT) Engineer The Opportunity My client is a highly successful and well-established manufacturing organisation with a strong reputation for quality, innovation and continuous improvement.
They are currently seeking an experienced and proactive Operational Technology (OT) Engineer to join their IT function, supporting multiple manufacturing sites across West Yorkshire. Reporting to the Head of IT, the successful candidate will take responsibility for leading, managing and delivering Operational Technology projects across the business. This will include control systems, automation, instrumentation, SCADA, PLCs, industrial networks and industrial digitalisation. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced OT, Automation or Control Engineer to take ownership of significant projects and play a key role in the development, reliability and resilience of the company's operational technology infrastructure.
The Role The Operational Technology Engineer will be responsible for the full lifecycle delivery of OT projects, from initial concept through to implementation and ongoing support. Key responsibilities will include:
Developing project concepts, specifications and technical solutions. Designing and implementing automation, control and OT infrastructure. Managing procurement, contractors, installation and commissioning activities. Managing project budgets, timelines and resources. Providing technical leadership and governance across OT and process control systems. Working closely with IT, engineering, production, maintenance and other operational stakeholders. Supporting operational reliability, business continuity and asset performance. Ensuring OT systems meet relevant cyber security and compliance requirements. Supporting the integration, resilience and ongoing development of industrial control systems. Identifying opportunities for improvement, digitalisation and technological development. Troubleshooting complex automation, control and industrial networking issues. Driving change and delivering initiatives designed to improve operational performance. Providing technical support and guidance across the company's OT environment. The Person My client is looking for an individual with a strong background in industrial automation, control engineering or Operational Technology who is comfortable working autonomously and taking ownership of projects from concept through to completion. The successful candidate will ideally have:
A Degree, HNC, HND or equivalent qualification in Control Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering or a related discipline. Proven experience delivering industrial automation and/or Operational Technology projects. Advanced knowledge of PLC, HMI and SCADA systems. Strong knowledge of instrumentation principles, configuration and calibration. Experience with industrial communication protocols including:
Profinet Profibus Ethernet/IP Modbus RTU & TCP OPC UA
A strong understanding of industrial networks, control systems and OT infrastructure. Experience in commissioning, troubleshooting and maintaining industrial automation systems. An understanding of OT cyber security and system resilience. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Strong organisational and project management abilities. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Good IT literacy, including Microsoft Office packages. The ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. The successful candidate will be proactive, commercially aware and able to demonstrate a genuine can-do attitude. They will need to work with a high level of integrity and autonomy, whilst also building strong relationships across the wider business.
