Job Description - Ophthalmic Technician

Who are we?

Newmedica are one of the leading providers of NHS ophthalmology services in England, providing outpatients appointments, diagnostic testing and eye surgery.  We aim to change lives through better sight and eye health.

We care for thousands of NHS and private patients a year in our specialist eye clinics across the country.  We have significant growth plans over the next few years as we look to establish a national footprint and open may new sites across the UK.

We are thrilled to say that, following an independently conducted survey of Newmedica colleagues, we have been certified as a Great Place to Work.  This is a global benchmark that recognises employers who create an outstanding employee experience.

Role Overview

We have an exciting opportunity in our purpose-built eye health clinic and surgical centre in Teesside.  We are looking for an experienced ophthalmic technician to join the team and help us continue to deliver outstanding clinical care for our patients.

Ophthalmic technicians play a key role in our daily eye clinics.  They support the clinical consultant, helping to ensure the smooth running of the clinics and that patient appointments run to time and are conducted in the right manner.  Over time, and with development, ophthalmic technicians can run their own clinics.

Ophthalmic technicians are trained to use all diagnostic equipment and will undertake clinic appointments and also act as a point of escalation if junior technicians or healthcare assistants have queries or concerns.

The thought of eye surgery can be a daunting prospect for patients to deal with; therefore, our ophthalmic technicians need to be empathetic and friendly and able to put patients at ease.  They also need to be able to explain the purpose of the different tests to ensure the patient understands their treatment.

What skills and experience do I need?

•    A good level of general education with an excellent grasp of the English language both verbally and in written format
•    Previous experience within an ophthalmology healthcare setting with a strong understanding of diagnostic services and equipment eg. Biometry, Optical Coherence Tomography and Humphrey Visual Field
•    Experience of working under own initiative with appropriate escalation where required
•    A good team player who is happy to support others when required; acting as a role model for more junior members of the team
•    An awareness / understanding of the CQC regulatory standards would be advantageous but not essential

What we are offering
•    Salary negotiable depending on experience
•    Up to 26 days annual leave plus bank holidays
•    A company pension scheme
•    A bonus scheme
•    Life Assurance (after completion of 1 years’ service)
•    Sickness Management Scheme
•    Contribution to professional registration fees
•    Access to a range of benefits including free eye tests, discounted or free glasses, a free 24/7 wellbeing, counselling and advice service, and a retail discount scheme.
•    An environment where your learning and development is supported through a range of various learning tools and courses
•    Working with a friendly multi-disciplinary team passionate about improving the lives of our patients
•    A bright, spacious and modern working environment, build to the highest standards
•    Free parking

Our employment offers are subject to receipt of satisfactory pre-employment checks.  Applicants must have the right to work in the UK and a Disclosure and Barring Service check will be necessary in the event of a successful application, which we will pay for.

At Newmedica, we actively promote diversity and equal opportunities, and we are committed to this in both the running of our services and how we recruit out staff.  We actively encourage applications for everyone with the essential requirements of the job, regardless of any protected characteristics.
