Job Description - Paediatric Primary Speech and Language Therapist

Job Title: Locum Paediatric Primary Speech and Language Therapist
Banding: Band 6/7
Location: South London
Start Date: ASAP (September 2026 start available, with earlier start for handover considered)
Rate: £24.00–£45.00 per hour
Working Hours: Full-time or part-time (minimum 3 days per week)

Job Overview

We are currently seeking a dedicated and experienced Paediatric Speech and Language Therapist (SALT) to join a primary school setting in South London on a locum basis. This role involves working across both an Enhanced Provision and a Targeted Mainstream model, supporting a diverse caseload of children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN), Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, and associated learning difficulties.

The school supports approximately 339 pupils, with a strong focus on SEN provision. Around 30 pupils access a specialist resource base, and all children within the Enhanced Provision have Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). The setting has a well-established communication-focused approach, including the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), pre-verbal communication strategies, and consistent frameworks such as Colourful Semantics.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Band 6 or Band 7 therapist looking for a flexible role within a well-supported and collaborative school environment.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Assess, diagnose, and deliver therapy for children with a range of speech, language, and communication needs, including ASC, DLD, and SEMH.

  • Manage a caseload of approximately 65 pupils across Enhanced Provision and mainstream settings.

  • Deliver targeted interventions through 1:1 sessions, small group work, and classroom-based strategies.

  • Support and implement AAC systems, including communication boards and other tools.

  • Provide guidance, training, and strategies to teaching staff to embed communication support across the school day.

  • Contribute to EHCP processes, including reviews, reporting, and target setting.

  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to support holistic outcomes for pupils.

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date clinical documentation.

Qualifications and Experience

To be considered for this role, you must have:

  • A recognised degree in Speech and Language Therapy (or equivalent).

  • HCPC registration and RCSLT membership (or eligibility).

  • Experience working with paediatric caseloads, ideally within schools or community settings.

  • Knowledge of AAC, pre-verbal communication approaches, and interventions such as Colourful Semantics.

  • Experience supporting children with ASC, DLD, and complex communication needs.

  • Strong communication, organisational, and teamwork skills.
