As a Payments Solution Architect, you’ll work as part of a multi-disciplinary architecture team, supporting Payments strategic programmes and value stream initiatives to shape and assure the technical direction for Nationwide’s Payments systems. We’re looking for someone with an established track record of architecting solutions, practical delivery experience, sound judgement and applied knowledge of the payments domain.
This role sits within the Payments Architecture team in Customer Technology Delivery, aligned to the Payments Chief Information Office. The team is responsible for defining the Payments technical roadmap, shaping solution options and ensuring the deliverables align to that roadmap, enterprise guardrails and relevant industry standards.
We are happy to consider flexible working approaches to help you perform at your best.
At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.
For this job you'll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you'll spend 40% of your working time, based at either our Swindon, London or Glasgow office. If you’re based at our Glasgow office, this will apply from 1 April 2027 and ahead of that there will be a need to regularly connect with colleagues for collaboration events. If your application is successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this works. You can also find out more about our approach to hybrid working here.
Whilst these locations are where we are primarily looking to fill the role, if you’re an internal applicant based in a different location we would welcome your application and if successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this could work for this specific role. You can also find out more about our approach to hybrid working here.
Nationwide is committed to the redeployment of our employees impacted by change, as such applications for redeployment candidates will be prioritised in this recruitment process.
If you’re a colleague on long-term absence (for example, on parental leave) or a temporary worker, please use your personal email address to submit an application.
What you’ll be doing

You’ll be a key part of the Payments Architecture team, supporting the Payments change portfolio by working alongside Payments feature teams, product and delivery colleagues, engineers, vendors, partners and architects from across Nationwide.
The role includes providing practical architecture advice on strategic technology issues, setting out clear options, trade-offs and recommendations so that change initiatives and sponsors can make informed decisions.
About you
As a minimum requirement, you’ll have:
Experience applying architecture thinking to real payments change, balancing strategy, delivery, resilience, regulation and member outcomes
Experience designing and delivering payments solutions in a UK financial services organisation or similarly regulated environment
Applying practical knowledge of payment schemes, standards and end-to-end processing across some or all of Faster Payments, Bacs, CHAPS, international payments, debit and credit cards, ATMs and Open Banking
Producing and assuring solution designs for large-scale technical change, including logical architecture, integration, data flows, non-functional requirements and operational considerations
Working with payments technologies and platforms, including payment gateways, payment engines, APIs, message flows, third-party services, SaaS/PaaS capabilities, bespoke software and commercial off-the-shelf packages
Applying payments standards and industry change, such as ISO 20022, scheme rule changes, message standards, settlement, reconciliation, exception handling and operational resilience considerations
Providing architecture guidance to engineers and delivery teams, helping them create fit-for-purpose artefacts that meet business needs, technology strategy and governance expectations
