Job Description - Payroll and Benefits Assistant

We have an exciting opportunity to join us here at Covéa Insurance as a Payroll & Benefits Assistant, within our HR & Learning Team!

At Covéa Insurance, we’re all about protecting what matters most - whether it’s your home, your car, or your business. With our award-winning customer service and a wide range of insurance products, we’re here to make a real difference.

In this role, you’ll be working in a team where payroll accuracy, regulatory compliance, and employee wellbeing sit at the centre of everything we do. You’ll collaborate closely with our Payroll Specialist and our Compensation & Benefits Specialist, contributing to a function that ensures employees are paid correctly, supported through a thoughtful benefits offering, and provided with a consistently positive experience throughout their time with us.

This is a hybrid position, combining the best of both worlds - working from home and spending 2 to 3 days a week in our Halifax office.

At Covéa, balance matters. We know life is busy, so we’re open to flexible hours, different working patterns, and arrangements that fit your circumstances. Many of our colleagues already work flexibly and we’re always happy to explore what works best for you.

Step into a role where your potential is valued and your growth is supported.

What does a day-to-day look like?

  • Support the full monthly payroll cycle by collating and validating inputs, calculating payments and deductions, and ensuring compliance with HMRC, PAYE, pensions, and all statutory requirements.
  • Assist with payroll month‑end and year‑end tasks, including statutory submissions, P45/P60 production, and routine reporting, while maintaining accurate payroll data through checks and reconciliations.
  • Act as a first point of contact for payroll queries, providing timely, accurate responses and escalating complex issues to the Payroll Specialist.
  • Manage day‑to‑day benefits administration, including maintaining data integrations between Avantus and Workday, updating benefits content, and supporting annual enrolment and wellbeing initiatives.
  • Coordinate reward and recognition processes—such as vouchers, gifts, and bonuses—ensuring correct approvals and accurate record‑keeping.
  • Maintain high standards of data accuracy and GDPR compliance, support audit activity, and provide clear documentation and guidance to embed payroll and benefits processes across the organisation

What you can bring to the team

  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and confidence with numbers.
  • Proficient in Excel and comfortable learning new systems.
  • Solid administrative experience with strong organisational and prioritisation skills.
  • Clear and professional communicator, able to handle sensitive queries appropriately.
  • Able to follow routine processes independently and work methodically with confidential data.
  • Proactive, motivated, and willing to support colleagues across varied tasks.
  • Positive and flexible attitude with a desire to learn and grow within a well‑established team.

Not sure if you tick every box? That’s okay!
At Covéa, we understand that not every candidate will meet every requirement listed. If this opportunity excites you and you feel you could be a great fit, we warmly encourage you to apply. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive team where everyone has the chance to thrive.

Why join us?

  • Flexible working – 36.25 hours a week with flexitime & hybrid options
  • Annual pay review – Plus performance bonuses (up to 30% depending on level)
  • Generous holidays – 25–27 days + bank holidays, with buy/sell options
  • Pension perks – 7.5% employer contribution, rising to 9% with your input
  • A culture where everyone belongs – We're committed to diversity, equity and inclusion, with real action, employee-led community groups, and ongoing learning to make Covéa a place where everyone can thrive
  • Mental & financial support – Through our dedicated Wellbeing group
  • Career growth – Training, qualifications and apprenticeships to help you thrive
  • Health & wellbeing – Private medical cover, 24/7 Virtual GP, health checks, flu jabs & more
  • Drive in style – Tusker Car Scheme with fully maintained insured vehicles
  • Extra savings – Gym discounts, Cycle to Work, and retail offers via Perkpal
