Job Description - Payroll and HR Assistant

If you're the kind of person who likes variety, structure, and being the go-to for all things people and payroll read on.

Working for a growing business in Hull, you'll play a key role in two vital functions: helping to run accurate, efficient payroll and providing solid HR admin support across the employee lifecycle.

One minute you might be preparing an offer letter for a new hire, the next you're updating payroll data or answering a query about annual leave. This is a hands-on, collaborative role, ideal for someone who enjoys detail, pace, and people.

What you'll be doing:

Payroll support:

  • Assisting with weekly and monthly payroll processing
  • Updating payroll data: new starters, leavers, changes, deductions, bonuses
  • Helping manage statutory payments and pension contributions
  • Responding to payroll queries and keeping accurate records
  • Supporting with HMRC submissions and payroll reporting

HR admin support:

  • Sending offer letters and contracts to new starters
  • Coordinating onboarding: right to work checks, system access, welcome packs
  • Managing leaver processes: confirmations, exit checklists, final pay details
  • Keeping employee records up to date across HR and payroll systems
  • Supporting with holiday tracking, absence monitoring, and general queries
  • Helping with the preparation of HR reports and metrics
  • Assisting on ad-hoc HR projects and process improvements

What they're looking for:

  • Previous experience in a HR or payroll admin role (or both)
  • Understanding of UK payroll processes and basic HR procedures
  • Confident using HR/payroll systems and Excel
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to juggle multiple tasks
  • Discreet and professional when dealing with confidential information
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Organised, proactive, and happy to work as part of a close-knit team
  • A genuine interest in both HR and payroll, with a desire to learn more
