Job Description - Payroll Assistant

Payroll Assistant

Reporting to: Payroll Manager
Location: Office-based, 5 days per week (1 day WFH after probation)
Salary: £26,000 per annum
Contract: Full-time, Permanent

Job Summary

We are looking for a highly organised and detail-oriented Payroll Assistant to support the smooth and accurate processing of monthly payrolls across our business. This role is ideal for someone with strong Excel skills and a proactive approach to managing data, deadlines, and payroll compliance. You will play a key role in ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time, while also supporting wider HR and finance teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Process monthly payroll for employees across multiple sites

  • Manage weekly payroll inputs including corrections, sickness, training, transfer hours, and accrued hours

  • Maintain and update employee payroll records and data files

  • Review and validate timesheets to ensure accuracy

  • Prepare and upload payroll reports to Sage 50 Payroll

  • Investigate and resolve payroll-related queries and discrepancies promptly

  • Liaise effectively with HR, Operations, Site Managers, and the Finance team

  • Perform manual payroll calculations when necessary

  • Support both independent tasks and collaborative team efforts

Qualifications & Skills
  • Experience in a payroll role or similar position

  • Proficient in Sage 50 Payroll or equivalent software

  • Strong attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy

  • Excellent time management and communication skills

  • Discreet and reliable when handling sensitive information

  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment

Education & Experience
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in payroll or a related field

  • Intermediate Excel proficiency (including formulas, pivot tables, data validation)

Work Environment
  • Office-based, 5 days per week in Northampton
