Job Description - Payroll Assistant - Fixed Term Contract

Payroll Administrator
  • Location: East Sussex
  • Job Type: Full-time

We are seeking a Payroll Administrator to join a busy team. This role involves administering the full payroll cycle, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with statutory requirements. The ideal candidate will have experience in payroll administration and possess strong problem-solving skills.

Day-to-day of the role:
  • Administer the full payroll cycle including handling starters, leavers, salary changes, absences, overtime, and pension deductions.
  • Check payroll documents for completeness and accuracy before input and resolve any issues with relevant departments.
  • Maintain and securely store payroll records in compliance with statutory requirements.
  • Handle payroll queries, investigate issues, and provide solutions or escalate them as necessary.
  • Liaise with external agencies such as East Sussex County Council, DWP, and HMRC to provide confidential and accurate salary information.
  • Conduct monthly payroll audits, maintain statutory records, and ensure timely dispatch of payroll data to employees.
  • Advise managers and employees on payroll and systems matters within agreed knowledge parameters.
  • Assist in the development of departmental pay and audit systems and produce high-quality documents as required.
  • Handle sensitive information such as reference requests for mortgages or rentals and respond to National Statistics returns and Freedom of Information requests.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Proven experience in payroll administration.
  • Strong understanding of payroll systems and HR IT systems.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to handle confidential information and multi-task effectively.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of statutory payroll requirements.
