Job Description - Payroll Assistant Manager

JOB TITLE: Payroll Assistant Manager
LOCATION: Oxfordshire (with limited travel to UK sites as required)
SALARY: Competitive, based on experience
WAY OF WORKING: Full-Time | On-site | Permanent

THE BUSINESS:
Our client is a well-established manufacturing group operating across multiple UK locations. With a centralised payroll hub supporting several industrial sites, the company manages all payroll operations in-house and provides regional payroll support to teams across Europe. This is an excellent opportunity to join a collaborative and forward-thinking payroll function known for accuracy, compliance, and strong service delivery.

Payroll Assistant Manager

Take ownership of end-to-end UK payroll processes and act as deputy to the Payroll Manager, overseeing the day-to-day operations and providing guidance to junior team members in a high-volume, multi-site environment.

Key Skills & Duties:
  • Accurately process monthly payroll for approximately 500 employees across various UK sites

  • Manually calculate PAYE, National Insurance and other statutory deductions when necessary

  • Manage workplace pension schemes and ensure compliance with Auto-Enrolment legislation

  • Process statutory payments including SSP, SMP, SPP, and SAP, and ensure timely year-end returns

  • Reconcile payroll-related accounts and complete monthly journals for finance reporting

  • Supervise payroll administrators and support team development and performance

  • Step in for the Payroll Manager when required, ensuring continuity of service

  • Drive process improvements and contribute to system upgrades or project implementations

  • Maintain compliance with UK tax and employment legislation as well as internal audit requirements

  • Confidently use Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook; experience with large-scale payroll systems essential
