Job Description: On‑Site Pre‑Operative (Pre‑Op) Cover

Job Title: On‑Site Pre‑Op Nurse / Pre‑Operative Practitioner
Location: On‑site in Glasgow
Reports To: Theatre Manager / Lead Nurse
Contract Type: Temporary / Agency / Ongoing Cover
Hours: As required by site

 

Role Summary

 

The On‑Site Pre‑Op Nurse is responsible for ensuring all patients attending for surgical procedures are assessed, screened, and prepared safely prior to theatre admission. This role supports smooth patient flow, reduces day‑of‑surgery cancellations, and ensures all pre‑operative documentation and clinical checks meet regulatory and organisational standards.

 

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

  • Conduct comprehensive pre‑operative assessments, including medical history review, allergies, BMI, vital signs, and ASA classification as appropriate.
  • Review GP letters, specialist reports, test results, and relevant medical documentation.
  • Identify and escalate red flags, contraindications, or fitness‑to‑proceed concerns to the Lead Clinician or Anaesthetist.
  • Complete required pre‑op testing, such as ECGs, MRSA swabs, blood tests, or pregnancy tests (depending on site protocols).
  • Provide evidence‑based pre‑operative advice, including fasting instructions, medication adjustments, and post-operative expectations.
  • Ensure accurate, timely documentation in patient records and electronic systems.
  • Support patient consent processes if required (site‑dependent).

Operational Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe, clean and compliant environment in accordance with CQC / HIS / NMC / HCPC standards.
  • Work closely with theatre teams to ensure timely patient flow and minimise delays.
  • Communicate efficiently with surgeons, anaesthetists, and admin teams.
  • Support site audits, stock levels, equipment checks, and infection control procedures.
  • Participate in emergency escalation procedures if a patient presents with concerning symptoms.

Patient Experience

  • Deliver a professional, reassuring and compassionate service to all patients.
  • Answer patient queries regarding procedures, risks, and post‑op care (within scope).
  • Ensure dignity, privacy and confidentiality are upheld at all times.

Skills & Experience Required

Essential

  • Registered Nurse (NMC) or Registered Practitioner (HCPC).
  • Minimum 1 year pre‑operative or surgical experience (theatres, pre-assessment clinic, recovery, or acute care).
  • Strong clinical decision‑making and risk assessment skills.
  • Ability to work independently on‑site with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent communication and documentation standards.
  • Up‑to‑date mandatory training and enhanced DBS/PVG.
  • Experience in day‑case surgery, ophthalmology, cosmetics, orthopaedics, ENT, or other elective specialities.
  • Ability to perform ECGs, blood draws, and point‑of‑care tests.
