Job Description - Principal Power Electronics Engineer
Our client is seeking a Principal Power Electronics Engineer to join its automotive engineering team on a permanent basis. Based in Birmingham, the role will lead the design and development of advanced power electronic units and systems, supporting customer projects, research and development products, and the full product lifecycle through to validation and production readiness.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead the design of power electronic units and systems incorporating analogue and digital circuits, interfaces and multicore controllers Develop power electronics hardware for automotive applications, including inverters, on-board chargers, DC-DC converters and motor control systems Design gate drivers, low-voltage power supplies, detailed schematics and supporting PCB layouts Use simulation tools such as PLECS, LTspice, Simulink and MATLAB to support design development and verification Lead prototype builds and provide electronic support during system testing, integration and validation activities Produce design verification documentation and contribute to FMEA, reliability prediction and MTBF analysis Lead engineering change control and ensure project documentation is managed in line with established processes and standards Provide technical leadership, mentor team members and work collaboratively with customers, suppliers and multidisciplinary engineering teams
Job Requirements:
Degree qualification in electronics engineering or an equivalent discipline Extensive experience in power electronics hardware design from concept through to delivery Strong knowledge of power semiconductor devices, including MOSFETs, IGBTs and wide-bandgap GaN and SiC devices Understanding of automotive design standards, the V-cycle and systems engineering principles Experience designing high-voltage and high-power electronic systems Knowledge of functional safety hardware and software development in accordance with ISO 26262 is desirable Experience with electric and hybrid vehicle applications, power quality standards and single- and three-phase systems is advantageous Strong communication, presentation, report writing, problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to lead work packages and mentor colleagues
Additional Information:
Permanent position based in Birmingham Standard working hours are 09:00 to 17:00, Monday to Friday At least three days per week are worked from the office Travel to a testing facility may be required Applicants must be eligible to work in the UK
