Are you a Project Editor who loves children’s fiction and wants to turn brilliant story concepts into books young readers will want to keep reading?
Our partner: Our partner is an established global publisher creating fiction and non-fiction for adults and children around the world. Its children’s publishing combines creativity, storytelling and trusted expertise, while a dedicated fan-focused division works in partnership with more than 40 major entertainment brands and intellectual properties. This is a collaborative publishing environment where strong ideas, editorial craft and creative partnerships are central to the books it produces.
Responsibilities:
- Take a portfolio of children’s books from initial concept through manuscript development, production and print, keeping projects on schedule and within budget.
- Deliver structural editing, line-editing, copyediting and proofreading across middle-grade fiction, chapter books, picture books and story books.
- Act as a key editorial contact for authors, agents and external licensors, providing strong author care and confidently managing feedback and approval processes.
- Contribute to brainstorming and concept development, while briefing and working closely with illustrators, designers and other internal and external creative partners.
- Collaborate with sales, marketing, publicity, international and creative teams, developing persuasive sales materials and presentations that support forthcoming titles.
Experience and skills that will deliver success in this role: The right candidate will be a hands-on children’s fiction editor with strong editorial judgement, excellent organisation and the confidence to manage several projects at different stages. You’ll enjoy working collaboratively but be equally comfortable taking ownership of your projects, developing ideas and navigating the requirements of authors, agents, licensors and creative teams.
Essential:
- Solid editorial experience working on middle-grade fiction, chapter books or wider children’s fiction.
- Strong structural editing, copyediting and proofreading skills.
- Excellent project management and organisational skills, with the ability to balance several deadlines at once.
- An interest in licensed publishing, entertainment brands and creating stories within established worlds.
- A creative, collaborative and adaptable approach, combined with sound commercial awareness and the confidence to work independently.
Desirable:
- Experience, or a strong aptitude, working with licensed properties, literary agents or high-profile authors.
- Experience commissioning authors or illustrators.
- A publishing background with evidence of generating ideas, responding to opportunities and adapting positively when priorities change.
The opportunity: This role offers plenty of hands-on editorial ownership alongside the chance to work on recognisable entertainment properties and a varied children’s fiction list. You’ll take projects right through from concept to finished book, work directly with authors and creative talent, and collaborate across editorial, design, sales, marketing, publicity and international teams. It should particularly suit an editor who enjoys both detailed manuscript work and the wider creative process of shaping commercially relevant books.
What’s on offer:
- Salary: c. £38k, plus bonus and benefits.
- Working pattern: Hybrid working in London, with a minimum of three days per week in the office.
- Reports to: Editorial Director.
