Project Engineer – Aerospace Design & Certification

£50,000 Basic DOE + Benefits Package

Full‑time Aerospace Engineering Design, Configuration & Compliance

About the Role

We are seeking a highly capable Project Engineer specialising in Aerospace Design & Certification to support the full lifecycle of new product development—from initial customer requirements through design, qualification, and final approval.

This role sits at the heart of our Design Engineering team and is ideal for an engineer who excels in aerospace design, configuration documentation, regulatory compliance, and structured certification processes. You will work cross‑functionally with sales, manufacturing, quality, and suppliers to ensure products meet stringent airworthiness and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

Aerospace Design & Configuration Control

  • Interpret customer requirements, technical specifications, and Statements of Work to define compliant design solutions.
  • Produce high‑quality 3D and 2D CAD models, drawings, and engineering documentation.
  • Ensure all design outputs meet aerospace configuration, traceability, and documentation standards.
  • Support design reviews, design change notes, and configuration updates throughout the project lifecycle.

Certification & Airworthiness Documentation

  • Develop and maintain certification artefacts including Compliance Checklists, Qualification Test Plans, and Test Reports.
  • Ensure alignment with applicable aerospace regulations and standards (UKCAA, EASA, FAA, CS‑27, CS‑29, DO‑160).
  • Conduct engineering assessments for non‑conformances, ensuring continued airworthiness and safety compliance.
  • Support internal and external audits related to design, configuration, and certification documentation.

Project Engineering & Cross‑Functional Support

  • Contribute to technical proposals, compliance matrices, and certification plans for bids and sales opportunities.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing engineering to ensure design intent, manufacturability, and cost‑effectiveness.
  • Work with suppliers on documentation, testing, and development activities.
  • Participate in project reviews, gate reviews, customer meetings, and supplier discussions.

Continuous Improvement & Problem Solving

  • Apply structured root‑cause analysis methodologies (8D, Ishikawa, 5 Whys) to resolve engineering issues.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives across design, documentation, and certification processes.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Manufacturing Engineering (or equivalent experience).
  • Proven experience in aerospace design and certification engineering.
  • Strong working knowledge of aerospace regulatory frameworks (UKCAA/EASA/FAA).
  • Proficiency in 2D/3D CAD (CATIA or SolidWorks preferred).
  • Experience with GD&T, tolerance analysis, and technical drawing creation.
  • Familiarity with PDM/PLM systems and configuration management principles.
  • Understanding of aerospace materials, manufacturing processes, and design for manufacture.
  • Experience in Part 21 Subpart G or Part 145 environments is advantageous.
  • Lean, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement experience beneficial.

Key Competencies

  • Exceptional attention to detail and documentation accuracy.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to balance design integrity, manufacturability, and regulatory requirements.
  • Effective communicator able to work across engineering, manufacturing, and operations.
  • Highly organised, able to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Self‑driven with a proactive approach to issue resolution and continuous improvement.
