Help Deliver and Hand Over Some of HS2's Most Significant Civil Engineering Assets
Are you a Civil Engineer with experience on major infrastructure projects and a good understanding of design assurance, technical compliance and engineering handover?
Charlton Recruitment is recruiting on behalf of High Speed Two Ltd for three Project Engineers to join the client-side team supporting the £6bn BBV Main Works Civils programme.
This is an opportunity to work across a substantial section of the new high-speed railway, supporting the technical assurance and handover of major civil engineering assets before they pass into the next stage of railway delivery.
Working alongside Senior Project Engineers, you will coordinate technical information, review engineering evidence and bring together contractors, designers and subject matter experts to ensure completed works meet HS2's requirements.
The role carries genuine engineering responsibility. You will identify technical issues, verify contractor deliverables and ensure the necessary evidence is in place to progress through assurance stages and support successful handover.
The Project – BBV Main Works Civils
The Balfour Beatty VINCI (BBV) joint venture is delivering approximately 90km of HS2's new high-speed railway through the West Midlands and the northern section of the route.
The £6bn programme includes an extensive range of major civil engineering assets, including 51 viaducts extending approximately 11km, 76 overbridges, numerous underbridges and culverts, major earthworks, twin-bore and cut-and-cover tunnels, underpasses and motorway crossings.
The scale and complexity of the programme create significant engineering assurance and coordination challenges, particularly as completed civil assets move towards handover and integration with the wider railway.
The BBV Main Works Civils contract has approximately four to five years remaining, while the wider HS2 programme offers around 10 years of further activity and career opportunities.
The Role
Working alongside a Senior Project Engineer, you will support the technical assurance and handover of civil engineering works across either a route-wide discipline or an allocated geographical section of the line of route, extending approximately 80km out of Birmingham.
Your focus will be on ensuring design and construction deliverables are technically compliant, properly evidenced and ready to progress through HS2's assurance processes.
You will review technical information produced by contractors and designers, check it against relevant standards and project requirements, and coordinate input from subject matter experts where specialist advice is needed.
This is a client-side project engineering role, rather than a hands-on design or site-based construction management position. It is particularly suited to someone from a civil engineering consultancy, contractor design team or major infrastructure project who wants to develop further into client-side engineering assurance and project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
* Coordinate technical assurance and engineering handover activities across allocated civil engineering assets or geographical areas.
* Review contractor and designer deliverables, verifying that technical evidence meets HS2 requirements, relevant standards and specifications.
* Support assurance reviews, spot-check design and construction deliverables, and ensure evidence is ready for formal review and acceptance.
* Manage engineering queries and coordinate responses between contractors, designers, subject matter experts and HS2 teams.
* Monitor technical risks, compliance and progress, escalating issues that could affect delivery or handover.
* Support CDM risk management and Principal Designer Representative responsibilities within your delegated authority.
* Manage interfaces between civil engineering delivery, the supply chain and the railway systems teams, while promoting best practice and efficient engineering solutions.
About You
You will have a civil engineering background and experience working on major new-build infrastructure projects.
You may currently be a Project Engineer, Civil Engineer, Design Engineer or Design Coordinator within a major contractor or engineering consultancy.
You will understand the importance of technical compliance, design assurance and engineering evidence, and be comfortable working with different organisations to resolve technical issues and maintain progress.
This role would suit someone looking to move from a consultancy or contractor design environment into a client-side engineering position, gaining broader exposure to technical assurance, project coordination and asset handover.
Essential Experience
* Degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
* Strong civil engineering experience gained on major new-build infrastructure projects, such as bridges, viaducts, earthworks, highways or tunnels.
* Experience in design assurance, technical assurance, engineering compliance or the close-out and handover of civil engineering works.
* Good understanding of CDM Regulations 2015 and Principal Designer responsibilities.
* Experience reviewing technical documentation, verifying engineering evidence and coordinating design information.
* Ability to manage technical queries and coordinate responses across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
* Working towards Chartered Engineer status, with a clear ambition to achieve chartership and progress professionally.
Desirable Experience
* Experience on HS2, Hinkley Point C, Crossrail or other major infrastructure programmes.
* Background in engineering consultancy, design coordination or major civil engineering contracting.
* Experience managing technical departures, engineering risks, assurance processes or handover documentation.
* Familiarity with NEC3, railway systems interfaces or digital document management systems such as ProjectWise.
Career Development and Opportunity
This is an opportunity to work directly for High Speed Two Ltd on one of Europe's largest infrastructure programmes, gaining exposure to major bridges, viaducts, tunnels and earthworks while working alongside leading contractors, design consultancies and technical specialists.
You will develop your experience across technical assurance, engineering coordination and the handover of major civil engineering assets, building the skills and programme knowledge to take on greater responsibility.
The next career step is Senior Project Engineer, with salaries in the region of £85,000 to £92,500 plus package. With around 10 years of wider HS2 programme activity remaining, there is also scope to build experience across further civil engineering, station and railway systems projects.
For a Civil Engineer looking to move beyond design production or contractor delivery and develop a broader client-side engineering career, this offers an excellent platform for progression
