Quality Engineer (Mobile Scrum Team)

24 month contract

Inside IR35 – Paying up to £40 per hour via umbrella.

Location: Hybrid – 3 days per week in office in London or Sussex

We are seeking an experienced, Quality Engineer who will you will be embedded within a cross-functional Scrum team, to help to build quality into the customer experience throughout the software development lifecycle.

Responsibilities will include:

Quality Engineering & Risk Management

* Embed quality early by participating in refinement, planning, design, and technical discussions to identify risks, edge cases, dependencies, and testability concerns.

* Apply risk-based testing approaches to determine appropriate coverage based on customer impact, technical complexity, change scope, and product risk.

* Identify and communicate quality risks early, including significant defects, coverage gaps, blockers, and emerging concerns.

* Collaborate with Engineering and Product teams to improve acceptance criteria, test stability, defect prevention, and overall engineering quality.

* Provide clear quality evidence by communicating coverage, defects, outstanding risks, and confidence levels to support informed team and release decisions.

Automation Engineering

* Build and maintain automated tests at the most appropriate engineering layer, contributing to API, customer journey/end-to-end, native mobile, and other relevant automation capabilities.

* Maintain automation health by investigating failures and improving flaky, unreliable, redundant, or low-value automated tests.

* Contribute to shared Quality Engineering capabilities by adopting and enhancing established approaches across customer journey/end-to-end automation, API automation, test data management, native mobile automation, and related disciplines.

Exploratory Testing & Investigation

* Perform targeted exploratory testing to investigate complex behaviours, edge cases, and customer scenarios where human exploration provides additional value.

* Use analytical and investigative techniques to understand issues, identify patterns, and support root cause analysis activities.

* Work closely with engineering teams during defect investigation and resolution to ensure fast feedback and effective remediation.

Continuous Improvement & Engineering Excellence

* Drive continuous improvement by developing your technical capabilities, sharing knowledge, and identifying opportunities to improve testing, automation, and engineering practices.

* Support a culture of shared ownership, learning, experimentation, and quality-focused engineering.

* Contribute to the evolution of quality engineering standards, tooling, and best practices across the wider organization.

You will need:

* Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain quality risks, technical issues, and recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

* Strong analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to understand complex systems, identify patterns, and perform effective root cause analysis.

* Solid understanding of Quality Engineering principles, including automation, risk-based testing, exploratory testing, quality advocacy, and defect prevention.

* Experience working within Agile Scrum teams and collaborating closely with Software Engineers and Product teams.

* Practical experience designing, developing, and maintaining automated tests.

* A proactive approach to ownership, learning, innovation, and continuous improvement.

WebdriverIO (WDIO) or comparable JavaScript/TypeScript-based UI automation frameworks.

* Appium for mobile application automation.

* JavaScript and/or TypeScript automation development.

* Native iOS and Android testing and automation.

* API testing and API automation frameworks.

* Customer journey and end-to-end automation.

* CI/CD tools and practices, particularly GitHub Actions.

* Test data creation and reusable test data management approaches.

* Automation reliability engineering, including identifying and resolving flaky, unstable, or inefficient tests.

* Logs, observability platforms, and engineering tools used for defect investigation and root cause analysis.
