Location: Bristol
Salary: £50,000 to £60,000
Sector: Defence / Construction
Job Type: Permanent
Are you a Quantity Surveyor looking for a role where you can take genuine commercial ownership of your projects?
We’re recruiting for a Quantity Surveyor to join our client’s General Works team in Bristol, supporting a portfolio of technically interesting projects within the defence sector.
The work is varied, covering refurbishment, installations, new build and the ongoing development of existing buildings and infrastructure, including secure areas, controlled access environments, offices and accommodation.
This would suit a QS who enjoys being close to project delivery and working collaboratively with the site team, rather than simply reporting numbers from a distance.
You’ll take commercial responsibility for your own projects and packages, working closely with project leadership and site management to protect commercial performance and achieve targets across cost, value, cash and margin.
Your responsibilities will include:
• Managing project commercial performance, reporting and forecasting
• Producing and contributing to cost value reconciliation reports
• Managing procurement and subcontract packages
• Preparing and placing subcontract orders
• Managing subcontractor accounts, payments and final accounts
• Identifying, measuring and managing variations and change
• Supporting the recovery of contractual and financial entitlement
• Preparing applications for payment and ensuring cash recovery remains on target
• Monitoring project expenditure against budget
• Identifying commercial and contractual risks
• Supporting project teams with contract requirements
• Monitoring subcontractor performance against programme
• Obtaining and evaluating competitive quotations
• Working with design and delivery teams to maximise value, quality and programme performance
• Building strong commercial relationships with clients, subcontractors, suppliers and the wider project team
• Supporting the commercial close out and financial completion of projects
✓ Demonstrable Quantity Surveying experience within building or construction projects
✓ A good working knowledge of procurement and subcontract management
✓ Experience of cost/value processes, commercial reporting and forecasting
✓ A working understanding of the main forms of construction contract
✓ Good knowledge of current construction contractual and commercial principles
✓ Experience managing variations, payments and subcontractor accounts
✓ Strong commercial judgement and negotiation skills
✓ The confidence to work directly with project and site teams
✓ Strong client and stakeholder communication skills
A main contractor background would be highly desirable, particularly if you’ve worked in technically complex, secure or regulated construction environments.
An HNC, HND or Degree in Quantity Surveying is required, either through the traditional or apprenticeship route.
Working towards RICS, CIOB or another relevant professional membership would be advantageous.

Car allowance for eligible roles
Competitive pension scheme
BUPA Healthcare and Cash Plan

25 days holiday plus Bank Holidays

If you’re a Quantity Surveyor who wants commercial ownership, varied project work and the opportunity to work within the defence sector, we’d like to hear from you.
