Job Description - Rail Associate Director / Director

Rail is essential for connecting communities, enabling thriving economies, and fostering sustainable growth. Trusted by governments, operators, regulatory bodies, and financial institutions, Steer’s Rail Advisory practice tackles the industry’s most complex challenges, providing strategic, commercial, economic, and operational advice that drives confident decision-making. With over 300 client partnerships, we have contributed to the £40bn [€250m] economic value the rail sector brings to the UK [EU]. We are committed to making rail better – more cost-effective, sustainable, and attractive for the communities it serves. We deliver powerful solutions that create value for stakeholders, shareholders, and customers alike.

We are looking for an experienced, motivated, self-starting, problem-solver and collaborative professional to join our Rail Advisory practice at Associate Director/Director grade. This person will be an important member of our senior team, responsible for sourcing, winning, leading and delivering commissions largely in the UK, but also looking for opportunities to support our global team.

The Rail Advisory Associate Director/Director will:

·       Build a vibrant pipeline of work through active management of client relationships.

·       Leverage their reputation as a specialist in the field to secure high value advisory work.

·       Support Steer’s Rail Advisory practice via client engagement and proposal development.

·       Assume leadership for delivering business performance and making strong commercial decisions.

·       Lead projects as a Project Director, bringing their industry experience ensuring that best practice techniques are applied consistently and full integration with Steer project teams.

·       Lead by example through mentoring and deliberate collaboration across the company.

About the candidate

At Steer, our employees are self-motivated, goal-oriented, and adaptive. Steer commits itself to providing our employees with the utmost support and training to streamline success from day one.

The ideal candidate for this role has:

·         Presence and reputation in the GB Rail sector with extensive and current client, partner and stakeholder networks

·         Strong knowledge of the GB railway and a keen understanding of current challenges it faces

·         Ability to provide high quality and analytically robust advice to clients on both the strategic and day to day challenges they face

·         Strong technical capability in one or more disciplines including Commercial, Operations, Transformation and Transactions.

·         Proven ability to originate opportunities, win work, and deliver work as Project Director for both the public and private sector

·         The ability to work autonomously yet in collaboration with other colleagues and our clients

·         Leadership experience

·         Industry experience essential, with time spent in consultancy roles desirable

We offer a flexible approach to work and believe in empowering our people and giving them the opportunities to shine.

The team you will be joining is based across our three UK offices in London, Leeds and Manchester and there will be opportunities to work with colleagues based in our offices overseas, in particular North America. Our social and cultural responsibilities form an important part of our culture and values. We believe that actions speak louder than words, and therefore have annual measurable targets across all social impact areas, particularly EDI and sustainability. This year we are delighted to have won the ‘Best Graduate Programme’ award from Women in Rail and our senior staff offer mentoring support to Women in Transport. We have also committed to successfully operate as a Net Zero Carbon company by 2025.

We offer a competitive package of benefits including private medical insurance and health screening, life assurance, group income protection, company pension scheme, EAP, ability to buy and sell annual leave days, Season Ticket Loan, Share Incentive Plan, up to 5 days for volunteering activities and a discretionary bonus scheme.

Steer is an equal opportunities employer and encourages applications regardless of age, race, disability, religion/belief, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy/maternity or gender. Many colleagues at Steer work part time and / or flexibly and we welcome applications from others wanting to work this way.
