Real Estate Underwriting Lead

A leading global insurer is looking to appoint a senior Real Estate underwriter or Senior Real Estate broker to establish and lead its regional Real Estate presence across the UK. The business already has a well-established and highly regarded Real Estate insurance platform in London, known for its expertise in managing complex risks and pan-European programmes. They are now expanding their capability into the regional markets, and this newly created role will be central to driving that growth.
Based in Birmingham, with responsibility for regional offices including Manchester and Leeds, you will have the autonomy to shape and deliver a specialist Real Estate proposition tailored to the needs of the UK’s regional markets. You will lead the underwriting of Property and Liability risks for Real Estate clients, handling both new business and renewals, while ensuring profitability and sustainable growth across your portfolio.
Collaboration will be key to success in this role, as you will work closely with claims, risk engineering, and global services teams to provide exceptional service to brokers and clients. You will also develop and maintain strong relationships with intermediaries, working on-site as needed to support complex portfolios and joint business development plans. Additionally, you will partner with other underwriting teams, such as Environmental and Global Terrorism, to create integrated, cross-class insurance solutions.
As a senior member of the team, you will mentor junior Underwriters, manage technical referrals, and help embed best practices within the team. You will represent the Real Estate function both internally and externally, contributing to financial planning, strategic initiatives, and business development activities. This role offers a chance to make a significant impact on a growing business area with the backing of an established London platform.
We are looking for a candidate with strong technical knowledge of Real Estate Insurance, ideally with experience managing large or complex Real Estate accounts. Whether you come from an underwriting or broking background, your ability to build and maintain broker relationships, lead key client conversations, and work independently will be essential. Experience mentoring others and contributing to a positive team culture will also be highly valued. Exposure to multinational programmes is a plus but not essential.
