Job Description - Registered Surgical Nurse

As a Surgical Nurse, you will play a key role in delivering high standards of peri-operative nursing care, supporting our veterinary surgeons during procedures, and ensuring a seamless patient journey — including the safe transfer and admission of surgical and complex cases to our 24-hour hospital in Watford.
You will be responsible for patient preparation, theatre support, anaesthesia monitoring, post-operative care, and discharge planning, while maintaining exceptional clinical standards and regulatory compliance. A significant part of this role includes coordinating and escorting patients requiring ongoing or advanced care to our 24-hour hospital in Watford, ensuring clear clinical handovers and continuity of care.

We are a 3-vet, first-opinion practice led by an experienced Branch Partner, supported by a collaborative team of 4 RVNs, a Client Care Assistant, and 2 VCAs. We are looking for an enthusiastic, confident, and proactive RVN with a strong interest in surgical nursing and inpatient care to join our close-knit and supportive team.
Medivet Flitwick is a well-established practice offering exposure to a wide range of surgical and medical procedures. This position would suit a nurse who thrives in theatre, enjoys hands-on surgical involvement, and is confident managing patients requiring referral or out-of-hours hospitalisation.
This is a full-time role working 40 hours per week across 4–5 days, with 1 in 4 Saturdays at Flitwick. You will also be required to work two bank holidays per year and complete two weeks of out-of-hours on-call duty annually at our 24-hour hospital in Watford.
If you are passionate about surgical nursing, patient advocacy, and delivering gold-standard care across both practice and hospital settings, we would love to hear from you.

Your career means more than a rota and a job title, that’s why we offer:

Health and wellbeing

  • Health Cash Plan from day one
  • 24/7 counselling and wellbeing support
  • Life Assurance 3 x salary

Annual leave

  • 5 weeks’ annual leave plus Bank Holidays, rising with length of service
  • Extra ‘Day for You’, a paid day off just for you

Learning and development

  • £750 CPD allowance plus 2 days’ paid leave per year
  • Access to Clinical Communities, internal CPD and our 24-hour hospitals
  • Funded certificates and internal career pathways

Additional support

  • RCVS and VDS fees paid
  • Cycle to Work
  • Season Ticket loans
  • Discounts on Medivet products and services

About you

You’re a RCVS registered Veterinary Nurse with a passion for delivering exceptional patient and client care.  You’re a team player who wants to make a real difference in a practice that values and supports you.

What you’ll be doing

Typically, in this role, you’ll:

  • Deliver exceptional standards of peri-operative and inpatient care, supporting consultations, surgeries and procedures in line with all regulatory, practice and operational standards
  • Provide comprehensive patient monitoring, including anaesthesia support, surgical assistance and post-operative care
  • Coordinate patient admissions, transfers and discharges, including the safe escort of cases to our 24-hour Watford hospital
  • Carry out nursing procedures at both branch and hospital level, contributing to the management of surgical and hospitalised cases
  • Deliver exceptional service and communication to clients, ensuring they feel informed and supported throughout their pet’s treatment journey
  • Work collaboratively within a supportive, close-knit team to maintain the highest standards of clinical care
