Deputy Chief Accountant

Hays are proud to be supporting a City Council who are seeking a dynamic and forward-thinking Deputy Chief Accountant to join its high-performing Finance Team.

This role would suit either fo the following:

1. A newly qualified CIPFA or ACCA accountant who is ready to step up in their career within Local Givernment Finance

2. An ACA newly qualfiied accountant from practice looking to make their first move (Public Sector Audit is a bonus)

Your New Role

As Deputy Chief Accountant, you will:

• Lead on the delivery of technical financial services including treasury management, VAT, and capital financing.
• Support the production of the annual Statement of Accounts and manage the external audit process.
• Provide strategic financial advice to senior leaders, cabinet members, and project teams.
• Contribute to the development of the Medium-Term Financial Strategy and Capital Strategy.
• Represent finance in corporate projects and system implementations.

What You'll Need to Succeed

• CCAB qualification (e.g. CIPFA, ACA, ACCA, CIMA) with senior-level experience.
• Strong understanding of local authority finance, VAT, and the Prudential Code.
• Proven ability to analyse complex financial data and present it clearly to non-financial stakeholders.
• Experience in treasury management, capital projects, and financial planning.
• A collaborative, innovative, and solutions-focused approach.
