Basketball England is seeking Expressions of Interest from qualified coaches to lead the Great Britain Men’s and Women’s U16 and U18 teams. Successful candidates will guide and develop their teams from May 2026 through the Eurobasket competitions in July and August.
This is an unpaid voluntary role. While no remuneration is provided, agreed expenses associated with training camps, competitions, and official duties will be covered.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
Team leadership & development
- Plan, organise and lead training sessions for the designated youth national age group (e.g. U16/U18).
- Develop game plans, coaching strategies and tactical preparation appropriate to international competition.
- Evaluate player performance and provide detailed feedback to enhance growth and performance.
Competition & performance
- Coach the team during tournaments (e.g. FIBA Youth European Championships).
- Analyse opposition teams and create appropriate game plans.
- Ensure readiness of the squad for competition through physical, technical and psychological preparation (in collaboration with support staff where available).
Talent pathway & player support
- Work closely with national programme leads - aligning youth team preparation with the broader performance pathway.
- Collaborate with club coaches, home nation associations, and performance staff to identify and support emerging talent.
- Mentor individual athletes on both on-court skill development and off-court professionalism.
Administration & compliance
- Participate in planning meetings, reporting and evaluation processes with Basketball England/Scotland/Wales representatives.
- Ensure compliance with all safeguarding and welfare requirements for youth athletes.
- Support logistics planning (travel, accommodation, medical protocols) alongside team managers.
Culture & representation
- Represent Great Britain/Basketball England’s values and performance expectations at all times.
- Champion high standards of discipline, integrity, inclusivity and respect within the team.
- Protect the integrity and profile of British Basketball & Basketball England at all times.
Minimum qualifications
- Recognised coaching qualification (Level 3 or higher in basketball, or international equivalent).
- Significant experience coaching competitive youth teams, preferably with national, elite academy or professional programmes.
- Demonstrated ability to work in high-performance sport environments and support young athletes.
- Alignment with and support for Basketball England and the Player Development Framework.
- Enhanced DBS/child safeguarding clearance (required to work with minors).
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- British citizen or right to work in the UK status.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

- CV and covering letter outlining relevant coaching experience and qualifications. Please clearly state which role/team you are applying to.
- A 2–3 page one-month plan, detailing how you would prepare and lead the team into the championships assuming very limited resources (e.g. restricted camp time, limited staffing and minimal access to technology).
Your plan should show:
- Your priorities for team identity and playing style
- A realistic training/camp structure and session themes
- How you will evaluate players and define roles quickly
- How you will prepare tactically for opponents with limited scouting resources
- How you will set standards/culture and manage behaviour expectations
SELECTION PROCESS
- All applicants will first be screened for eligibility and relevant coaching experience.
- A Home Nations selection panel will then independently score each candidate.
- Final decisions will be made via a panel vote at Home Nations.
