IRIS Software Group is one of the UK's largest privately held software companies, trusted by 100,000+ businesses, schools and accountancy firms to keep their operations running. Our software pays 1 in 6 UK employees, supports over 12,000 schools, and is relied on by 91 of the top 100 UK accountancy firms.
We're a Great Place to Work® certified employer, recognised for our commitment to well-being, inclusion and development - and we're growing fast.
As a Reporting Services Developer within our iSAMS business, you’ll build and deliver high-quality reporting solutions that help schools turn their data into clear, useful information.
This is a hands-on technical role where SSRS and SQL are at the heart of what you’ll do. You’ll create and maintain reports using Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), T-SQL, Power BI and our in-house Report Designer, while working directly with customers to understand their reporting needs and provide practical solutions.
You’ll work across custom reports, catalogue/templates and built-in reporting, taking requirements through from initial request to successful delivery.
Why This Role Matters
Schools rely on accurate data every day to make important operational and strategic decisions.
Our Reporting Services team helps iSAMS customers get more value from the information held within their school management system by turning complex data into reports that are clear, reliable and easy to use.
Your work will directly influence the experience our customers have with iSAMS. Whether you’re developing a new SSRS report, solving a reporting issue or helping a customer understand how to achieve what they need, you’ll be making their working lives simpler.
About the Team You'll Join
You’ll join our specialist Reporting Services team of around seven people, working collaboratively across the UK and India.
The team combines strong technical reporting knowledge with a customer-focused approach. You’ll work alongside experienced Report Developers, share knowledge and contribute to improving the quality and efficiency of the reporting service we provide.
There’s plenty of opportunity to deepen your knowledge of SSRS, SQL, Power BI and the wider iSAMS platform, while also developing your customer-facing and consultancy skills.
What You'll Be Doing
As a Reporting Services Developer, you’ll:
Design, build and maintain professional reports using Microsoft SSRS, T-SQL, Power BI and our in-house reporting tools.
Work directly with customers to understand reporting requirements and translate them into practical technical solutions.
Develop custom reports alongside catalogue/template and built-in reporting solutions.
Write and work confidently with SQL/T-SQL to retrieve, manipulate and present data.
Take ownership of reporting requests, managing your workload and delivering agreed work to deadlines.
Investigate and resolve technical reporting issues using remote access tools, diagnostic information and internal knowledge resources.
Keep our Service Desk system accurate and up to date, including clear technical notes and progress updates.
Work closely with other Report Developers and iSAMS teams to resolve more complex customer requirements.
Proactively suggest better or more efficient ways of meeting customer reporting needs.
Identify recurring reporting issues or requests and help the team improve the wider service.
Support customers and colleagues with technical and non-technical reporting queries.
Maintain useful technical documentation, internal guidance and knowledge resources.
Contribute to team projects focused on improving report quality, processes and service efficiency.
Keep your knowledge of iSAMS and its reporting capabilities up to date as the platform develops.
Regularly review internal processes and suggest improvements where appropriate.
Attend occasional in-person team meetings or events.
There is also the opportunity to take additional responsibility as the team’s SSRS Trainer, if this is an area you are interested in developing.
This could include:
Delivering structured online SSRS training to customers.
Running customer consultancy sessions around SSRS and reporting.
Helping customers understand how to build and manage their own reports.
Keeping training materials aligned with current SSRS functionality and best practice.
Adapting technical explanations and training styles for different audiences and levels of experience.
What We’re Looking For
We’re particularly interested in people who have:
Hands-on experience creating reports using Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).
Strong SQL / T-SQL skills and confidence working with relational data.
Experience gathering requirements and turning them into effective reporting solutions.
A good understanding of Microsoft Power BI.
Experience working directly with customers, clients or internal stakeholders.
Experience investigating, diagnosing and resolving technical problems.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent attention to detail, particularly when working with data.
The ability to explain technical information clearly to people who may not have a technical background.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Good organisation skills and the confidence to manage your own workload and deadlines.
A proactive approach – you look for solutions rather than waiting to be told what to do.
The ability to work independently while still collaborating closely with a wider team.
Flexibility when priorities or customer requirements change.
An interest in continuing to learn new reporting technologies, tools and techniques.
If you’re interested in the training element of the role, the ability to adapt your communication and training style for different audiences and learning needs would be particularly valuable.
What You’ll Gain
The opportunity to specialise further in SSRS, SQL, Power BI and data reporting within an established software business.
A varied role combining technical development, problem-solving and direct customer interaction rather than purely back-office report building.
Exposure to real-world reporting requirements from schools using iSAMS every day.
The chance to broaden your experience into technical consultancy and customer training, if that interests you.
A collaborative international team where you can learn from experienced Reporting Developers and contribute your own ideas.
Opportunities to improve reporting standards, processes and the wider customer experience as the iSAMS platform continues to develop.
