Safety Engineer- Defence

Role Overview

The Safety Engineer will be responsible for delivering safety and environmental engineering support across the full system lifecycle for defence platforms and systems. This includes the development of safety cases, hazard analysis, and compliance with UK defence standards. The role requires collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams and stakeholders to ensure that safety requirements are met in line with project objectives.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain Safety and Environmental Cases in accordance with MOD and industry standards (e.g. DEF STAN 00-056, IEC 61508).
• Conduct Hazard Identification (HAZID), Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOP), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and Safety Integrity Level (SIL) assessments.
• Lead and participate in safety reviews and workshops with internal teams, clients, and regulatory bodies.
• Produce and review safety documentation including Safety Plans, Hazard Logs, and Risk Assessments.
• Ensure traceability of safety requirements through tools such as IBM DOORS.
• Support the integration of safety into the engineering lifecycle (V-model), from concept through to decommissioning.
• Engage with suppliers and subcontractors to ensure safety compliance across the supply chain.
• Provide input to bids, proposals, and project planning from a safety perspective.

Essential Skills and Experience

• Proven experience in safety engineering within the defence sector or other safety-critical industries (e.g. nuclear, aerospace, oil & gas).
• Strong understanding of UK MOD safety regulations and standards.
• Proficiency in safety analysis techniques and tools (e.g. HAZOP, FMEA, FTA).
• Familiarity with safety lifecycle management and systems engineering principles.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
