Job Description - School Music Technician (September 2026)

Music Technician

Term Time Only (40 Weeks Per Year)
Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 4:30pm
Additional flexible hours may be required to support school events and performances.

Join Our Creative Arts Team

We are seeking an enthusiastic, organised and technically skilled Music Technician to support the vibrant Music Department within our school. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a passion for music technology, sound engineering, performance support and arts education to play a key role in both curricular and extra-curricular activities across Music, Dance and Drama.

Working closely with the Head of Music, you will provide technical and administrative support to ensure the smooth delivery of lessons, rehearsals, concerts, productions and examinations. You will also help develop opportunities for students interested in the technical side of the performing arts.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

Provide technical support for school and Music Department events, including concerts, productions, open evenings and festivals.
Design, set up and operate sound and lighting systems for rehearsals and performances.
Take a leading role in regular Music Department events and performances.
Record performances and manage the sharing of recordings, photographs and event information with parents and the wider school community.
Support students interested in technical theatre, sound and lighting through the development of a student technical team and extracurricular clubs.
Assist with the administration of peripatetic music lessons, including timetabling, registers, invoicing and instrument hire.
Manage the recording, presentation and submission of student coursework and practical music examinations.
Monitor, maintain and organise musical instruments, audio equipment and technological resources.
Prepare and set up instruments, recording equipment and sound systems for lessons, rehearsals and performances.
Liaise with the IT department and external specialists regarding equipment maintenance and technical support.
Support the ordering and management of departmental resources and equipment.
Maintain departmental digital files, recordings and resources.
Work collaboratively with teaching staff to support high-quality music education and enrichment opportunities.

About You

We are looking for a candidate who has:

Essential Requirements

A sound general education.
GCSEs and/or A Levels in relevant subjects, ideally including Music Technology.
Experience of working with music equipment and resources.
A working knowledge of music technology, audio equipment and its maintenance.
Experience using sound and lighting equipment for performances and productions.
The ability to set up and operate recording equipment to capture high-quality performances.
Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workloads and meet deadlines.
An understanding of health and safety requirements.
Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
A commitment to equality, inclusion and safeguarding.

Desirable Requirements

Further relevant qualifications.
Strong IT skills.
Experience working with young people in an educational setting.
Strong interpersonal and liaison skills.
An empathetic and supportive approach when working with students.
