Job Description - SEMD Design Lead

The Role:

Bridges is delivering a programme of SEMD interventions / compliance upgrades across the Thames Water estate.  Our schemes are across a range of sites of varying size and complexity.

Required duties:

  • Manage and support design elements and deliverables for the programme.
  • To lead, develop and grow a team of seconded engineers, designers, associated support team members, and subcontracted specialists to support the programme
  • To support a seamless interface between design, PM, planners, commercial teams, client, external technical supports, suppliers, etc.
  • Ensure deliverables are agreed, assigned, and understood (clarity) at all stages from outline design to final handover. Ensure dates are agreed, shared with the PM and Planners, checked in on, and achieved. Advise any potential opportunities, delays, risks, changes to programme or planned costs.
  • Coordinate, review and chase RFI schedules to ensure identified information is available when needed to prevent delays.
  • Innovate, challenge and support across projects and designs. Considering continuous improvement, opportunities, and any areas of potential noncompliance.
  • Identify and manage scope change in design, being mindful of change control requirements, revised risk and potential programme change. Advise the PM/Commercial of potential contractual and programme implications and mitigation.
  • Support identification of Temporary Works, ensuring the delivery team have it correctly identified, communicated and managed.
  • Support production of specifications and/or statements of need for plant, contract designs, and survey works, ensuring clarity of outputs and standards expected to meet ours and our clients needs, and industry standards, legislation, etc.
  • Address any challenges and coordinate design or technical teams to support efficient and effective resolution. Identify and be a part of escalation for any identified issues or risks.
  • Oversee, support and coordinate contracted design, survey or other technical support contractors, reviewing costs, programmes, agreed deliverables, specifications, etc.
  • Forecasting of design labour requirements, future needs, potential skills gaps, and capacity. Discuss needs with Design Managers to ensure team secondments cover needs of the projects.
  • Be a part of design assurance, ensuring key stages and reviews are completed, as defined in the Bridges Way, to include, DRAs, ALMs, Buildability, HAZOPs, etc. Be a part of other technical and commercial reviews during the design and construction phases.
  • Support periodic reviews of deliverables, cross referencing information to ensure alignment between disciplines.
  • Attend project related meetings online, in person, at our offices, sites or client's offices, to represent the design and technical team and develop and maintain strong relationships and communication channels with all stakeholders.
  • Managing sitewide CAD GA drawings, and minor civils GA’s
  • Review & approval or all internal and external design outputs assisted by the project delivery team to the requires standards & specifications.
  • Management of design documentation revision & submission to client Management systems
  • Generating design risk registers, reports & supporting documentation as required to meet the project brief as the PD representative.
  • Generation & distribution of technical specifications and scopes of work to the supply chain.
  • Management of communication including design meetings both internally and externally with the supply chain to achieve project goals.
  • Interrogation & application of security standards, specifications & scopes of work for all design outputs.
    • Client standards, NPSA standards, WUKSS, LPCB standards etc
  • Site surveys, investigations & visits

Essential

  • Familiarity & competence with standard drawing software packages (CAD etc)
  • Competence in external & internal document review and change management.
  • Competence in requirement identification, information compilation & compliance assessment necessary to facilitate the generation technical specifications and scopes for the supply chain.
  • Familiar & competence in generating Design risk register, design reports & supporting documentation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with the supply chain and Bridges design departments to provide the required project outputs

 

Desirable:

  • Minor structural calculation & assessment (Structural loadings, simple statics etc)
  • Familiarity with RTC360 Lidar point cloud scanning & modelling software.
  • Familiarity with electronic security design & provision in a commercial environment
  • Familiarity with Physical security design & provision in a commercial environment
  • Familiarity with Genetec AMC Software (Security center)
  • Familiarity with typical physical hardening measures deployed on sensitive commercial assets (fencing, barsets doors etc)
  • Awareness of the function and design of PIDS & IDS systems, including notable brands such as Southwest microwave.
  • Awareness of industry prevalent Security standards
    • NPSA, WUKSS, LPCB etc
  • Familiarity with the water industry, particularly regarding SEMD projects/schemes
  • Prior experience working on/around CNI assets

To apply to this role you must also meet the following Security requirements

  • Be a UK Citizen for greater than 5 years & not lived outside the UK longer than 6 months in any single 12-month period during the last 5 years
  • Applicants must not be on (or closely related to an individual on) the UK government FCDO sanctions list.
  • Has no prior or pending criminal convictions (excluding speeding and parking offences)
  • The candidate must undergo a DBS screening check & will be required to obtain minimum standard of CTC level government clearance
