Job Description - SEMH Teaching Assistant

Role: SEMH Teaching Assistant

Location: Taunton

Start date: As soon as possible

Contract: Flexible (ad-hoc, long-term and permanent opportunities available)

Salary: £100 - £110 per day 

Are you passionate about making a meaningful difference in the lives of young people? Do you have the skills and dedication to support students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you!

Our client, a state-funded special school in Taunton, is seeking a committed and compassionate SEMH Teaching Assistant to join their team. This specialist setting caters to students in Years 5 – 11 who have an EHCP supporting their SEMH and Social Communication and Language (SCL) needs. The school is dedicated to providing a nurturing, inclusive, and structured environment where students can build resilience, develop social and emotional skills, and achieve academic success.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

Provide tailored support to students with SEMH and SCL needs in both classroom and outdoor learning environments.

Assist in delivering a core curriculum focusing on literacy, numeracy, PSHE, and PE, alongside wider subjects including Art, Science, Careers, and Life Skills.

Support students in developing self-confidence, emotional regulation, and independence.

Facilitate learning experiences beyond the classroom, including forest school, outdoor education, and enrichment activities.

Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and pastoral staff to implement personalised support strategies.

Foster a positive and inclusive learning atmosphere, ensuring every student feels valued and understood.

 

Requirements:

 

Experience working with young people with SEMH needs, ideally within an educational or care setting.

A patient, empathetic, and proactive approach to supporting students with complex needs.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to adapt to different learning styles and behavioural needs.

A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people

An enhanced child workforce DBS on the update service (or willingness to obtain one)
