Job Description - SEMH Teaching Assistant

SEMH Teaching Assistant
North Shields – Full Time
£13.68 per hour (pre-AWR)
Start: ASAP

The Role
Vision for Education are working with PRU (Pupil Referral Unit) and alternative provision settings in North Shields to recruit a resilient and experienced SEMH Teaching Assistant. This full-time role, starting as soon as possible, involves supporting young people with social, emotional, and mental health needs — including those who display challenging behaviour or who have been permanently excluded from mainstream school.

This is a demanding yet highly rewarding position for a skilled professional with experience in SEMH support, behaviour management, or alternative education. You will work closely with teaching staff, pastoral teams, families, and external agencies to deliver targeted interventions, promote positive behaviour, and help pupils re-engage with learning in a highly supportive environment.

Please note: Previous experience in SEMH or PRU settings is essential. A current Team Teach qualification (or equivalent positive handling training) is highly desirable.

Requirements
The successful SEMH Teaching Assistant will have:

Proven experience supporting children or young people with SEMH, behavioural needs, or within PRU/alternative provision

Strong behaviour management and de-escalation skills

A nurturing, calm, and consistent approach

Knowledge of safeguarding, trauma-informed practice, and SEMH strategies

Excellent communication skills and the ability to build trust with vulnerable learners

A Team Teach qualification (desirable, but training can be offered)

What We Offer
When you join Vision for Education, you benefit from:

Variety & Flexibility – Experience a range of PRU and specialist SEMH environments

Competitive Pay – Great rates, paid reliably through our PAYE system

Work-Life Balance – No planning or marking outside of working hours

Ongoing Development – Access to regular CPD and behaviour management training

Dedicated Support – A consultant available 24/7 to offer guidance and assistance

Future Opportunities – Pathways into long-term or permanent SEMH roles
