Job Description - SEN Teaching Assistant

To work under the direction of the class teacher and senior staff to support pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN) in accessing a broad and balanced curriculum. The SEN Teaching Assistant will play a vital role in helping pupils develop both educationally and socially, working 1:1 or with small groups, and supporting behaviour, communication, and physical needs as appropriate.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the learning and emotional wellbeing of pupils with SEN on a 1:1 or small group basis.

  • Assist in the planning, preparation, and delivery of activities and interventions that meet individual needs.

  • Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and other professionals.

  • Promote positive behaviour and help manage challenging behaviour in line with school policies.

  • Support the development of pupils' communication and interaction skills.

  • Help maintain detailed and accurate records of pupil progress and behaviour.

  • Support pupils with personal care and hygiene needs, where required.

  • Create a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all pupils.

  • Attend training sessions and team meetings as required.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Experience working with children or young people with SEN.

  • A nurturing, patient, and flexible approach.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work well as part of a team.

  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
