SEN Teaching Assistant - Visual Impairment

We are working in partnership with a warm and inclusive primary school in Huddersfield, which hosts a specialist Additionally Resourced Provision (ARP) for children with visual impairments. From September the school is seeking a committed SEN Teaching Assistant to support pupils with visual impairment within both the mainstream classroom and the ARP base.

About the Role of a SEN Teaching Assistant:

You will play a vital role in supporting children with a range of visual impairments to access the curriculum and develop key skills for independence. This includes supporting learning both in-class and during individualised interventions within the provision, where children receive daily specialist tuition as part of their Additional Curriculum.

This curriculum includes:

• Braille and Pre-Braille
• Habilitation (mobility) and Independent Living Skills
• Specialist ICT, including touch typing and screen reader software
• Use of Low Vision Aids
• Tactile and Listening Skills
• Social and emotional development, including knowledge of their own eye condition

Pupils are fully included in all mainstream activities, and the provision has a strong focus on enabling independence, confidence, and equal access to education and development.

The Ideal Candidate:

We are looking for someone who:

• Has experience working with children with special educational needs, particularly visual impairment
• Is enthusiastic, patient, and committed to supporting the development of the whole child
• Understands the importance of tactile, auditory and technological adaptations in learning
• Can work proactively with teachers, therapists, and parents to support children’s progress
• Is passionate about inclusion and helping children to develop independence and confidence
