Job Description - SEND Tutor

Job Description:

We are seeking a patient, enthusiastic, and committed SEND Tutor to join our team, providing personalised educational support to learners with special educational needs and disabilities. This role involves delivering one-to-one or small group tutoring sessions that cater to individual learning styles, ensuring academic, emotional, and social development. You will play a vital part in building learners’ confidence, resilience, and independence.
The ideal candidate will bring a deep understanding of inclusive education, a flexible approach to teaching, and a passion for making a meaningful difference in the lives of children and young people with SEND.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver tailored lessons aligned with students’ Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and individual learning goals.
  • Support learners with a variety of SEND, such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), dyslexia, ADHD, sensory processing difficulties, and general learning difficulties.
  • Adapt teaching resources and methods to suit the unique needs of each learner, ensuring accessibility, engagement, and progression.
  • Create a nurturing, inclusive, and motivating learning environment, whether in-person or online, that supports emotional and social development as well as academic achievement.
  • Track and assess student progress, providing regular feedback and detailed reports to parents/carers, education professionals, and other stakeholders.
  • Maintain strong and effective communication with families, support staff, and external agencies involved in the learner’s development.
  • Promote independence, confidence, and a positive attitude toward learning, using praise, encouragement, and positive behaviour support techniques.
Requirements:
  • Experience teaching or tutoring students with SEND, ideally in one-to-one or small group settings.
  • A relevant teaching or tutoring qualification such as Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), PGCE, or a Level 3/5 SEND certification (or equivalent).
  • Sound knowledge of SEND-specific teaching strategies, interventions, and inclusive practices, including familiarity with EHCP implementation.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong, trusting relationships with learners and families.
  • Strong organisational skills, with the ability to plan, record, and review learning sessions effectively.
  • Empathy, patience, and adaptability, with a commitment to supporting every child’s unique learning journey.
Desirable:
  • Experience using alternative communication methods (e.g., Makaton, PECS, visual supports).
  • Knowledge of safeguarding procedures and relevant educational legislation.
  • Experience working within a multidisciplinary team or alongside therapists and SENCOs.
