Job Description - Senior Accountant

Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Accountant to join our newly established Accounting and Reconciliation Transformation team. The team provides subject matter expertise to help drive transformational change across Nationwide’s financial reporting and controls.

We are looking for a high-calibre, enthusiastic self-starter who can work well in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and help deliver impactful change. This includes keeping documented financial controls and processes up to date as projects and wider business changes are delivered, including activity linked to the integration of Nationwide and Virgin Money.

The role will support the team’s vision and strategic direction by applying strong accounting and controls knowledge, improving ways of working, and building trusted stakeholder relationships. It sits within a team responsible for creating, managing and improving accounting, reconciliations and controls across the Society, providing insight that supports effective decision-making and strong commercial outcomes.

We are happy to consider flexible working approaches to help you perform at your best.

The working hours (per week) for this role can be between 28 and 35 hours.

At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.

For this job you'll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you'll spend 40% of your working time, based at either our Swindon or London office. If your application is successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this works. You can also find out more about our approach to hybrid working here

Whilst these locations are where we are primarily looking to fill the role, if you’re an internal applicant based in a different location we would welcome your application and if successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this could work for this specific role. You can also find out more about our approach to hybrid working here.

Nationwide is committed to the redeployment of our employees impacted by change, as such applications for redeployment candidates will be prioritised in this recruitment process.

If you’re a colleague on long-term absence (for example, on parental leave) or a temporary worker, please use your personal email address to submit an application.

Responsibilities

What you’ll be doing

As a Senior Accountant, you'll play an important role in helping the team deliver high-quality accounting and reconciliation processes while supporting ongoing transformation and improvement activity. You'll ensure accounting solutions are accurate, well understood and clearly documented, identifying opportunities to strengthen processes, address gaps and improve the overall control environment.

You'll help maintain and enhance financial controls, keeping documentation up to date as processes, systems and business requirements evolve. Using your expertise, you'll contribute to change initiatives and transformation programmes, providing valuable insight that supports effective financial reporting, risk management and decision-making.

A key part of the role is identifying opportunities to simplify and improve the way work is done. Whether through automation, process improvements or new ways of working, you'll help drive positive change across the team and wider Finance function.

You'll also support and develop junior colleagues, sharing your knowledge, building capability and acting as a trusted point of contact for guidance and advice. Working closely with stakeholders across Finance and the wider business, you'll build strong relationships, provide constructive challenge and influence decisions that help deliver the Society's strategic ambitions.

About you

As a minimum, you’ll be:

  • A qualified accountant with a relevant qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) and proven post qualification experience ideally within a Finance function which includes reconciliations, month end close and reporting
  • Experience of operating, designing or management of financial controls
  • Collaborative in your approach with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to build positive relationships with colleagues at all levels
  • Self-motivated, organised and proactive in finding opportunities to drive change
  • A passion for problem solving and identifying solutions to complex issues

Our customer first behaviours put customers and members at the heart of how we work together. They are the set of behaviours that every colleague needs to display, in every role:

  • Feel what customers feel - We step into our customers’ shoes, using their feedback and insights to empathise with them and to understand their needs, so that every decision we make starts and finishes with our customers in mind

  • Say it straight - We are brave in speaking out and saying what we think – we’re honest and direct with good intent, openly sharing diverse perspectives to reach the best conclusions and using language everyone can understand

  • Push for better - We don’t settle for mediocrity, we challenge the status quo, taking responsibility for continuous improvement and personal development

  • Get it done - We prioritise what will have the greatest impact, we are decisive, and we take accountability for delivering brilliant customer outcomes

You can strengthen your application by showing how our customer first behaviours resonate with you, and where you may have already demonstrated these.
