We started Marshmallow when we found out how unfair insurance prices are for people who move to the UK. All because the industry hasn’t given this huge cohort of people a second’s thought, and isn’t set up to price them properly. 

We saw an opportunity to do things differently, so we made it our mission to back the ones who step outside the norm. Since we started, we’ve helped 100,000s of people get a fairer deal on their car insurance. Using technology, we serve people that are often overlooked by financial services companies, solving important problems for people who need it most. 

We know there are millions of marginalised customers out there. And we know that they face unique problems that most companies aren’t even aware of. We believe that our future is helping these people by learning about their experiences, and building our company around their needs. And there are strong signs that there’s a need for a company like us. Earlier this year we hit profitability, which is a huge milestone, but the most exciting thing is that we’re only just getting started.

That’s why we collaborate to do in-depth planning twice a year, and make sure we leave with clear goals and objectives that flow from top to bottom. To make sure we’re as aligned as possible across functions, most of our work rolls up into four tribes; Acquisition, Retention, Claims and Pricing, Underwriting & Fraud. Each tribe has multiple teams embedded in it, working cross-functionally to do great work.

We're hiring a Senior Data Analytics Engineer to join our team here in London!

What you’ll be doing

• The Senior Data Analytics Engineer will act as the subject matter expert for any technical development in DBT, Snowflake or Looker. They will own these platforms, ensuring that any code changes and new features are built in a sustainable way and without contributing to tech debt

• Data Analytics Engineers will be required to form a deep understanding of our more holistic Data Platform to enable safe work on wider parts of the data stack.

• The Senior Data Analytics Engineer will partner closely with the analysts, holding them accountable to following best practice when working with these systems. They will view these tools/platforms holistically, designing a longer term strategy for how they can provide the most value to the business. Their success will be measured by the increase in analyst’s efficiency - whether this is achieved through better self-service by stakeholders or easier to analyse datasets.

• Championing the best practices within the data engineering domain with an emphasis on data quality, governance and a healthy data culture.

Who you are (Must haves)

• You have commercial experience working on production ETLs (big data and data warehousing) and data modelling as a developer or an analyst.

• Deep understanding of Snowflake and its architecture.

• You have a deep understanding of SQL and data modelling.

• You are comfortable with general Data Warehousing concepts.

• You have experience with DBT.

• You have experience with Looker or similar data exploration and BI tooling.

• You proactively identify issues and opportunities that can improve work in your domain and beyond.

• You have experience building robust and reliable data sets requiring a high attention to detail and consideration for data quality.

• You have experience working closely with (or as) an analyst/s and have collaborated effectively with them.

What we're looking for from you (Nice to haves)

• Exposure to Python, Java or similar languages

• Any experience working within an insurance function or knowledge of insurance

• Experience working with orchestration frameworks such as AWS Step Functions/Airflow etc

• Experience working with AWS cloud services

Our process

We break it up into 4 stages:

• Initial call with one of our Talent team (30 mins)

• A skill-based and cultural interview where you will go through your past experience with Randal, Lead Data Engineer (75 mins)

• A technical interview with Krishan and Eddy, our Senior Data/Analytics Engineers, focusing on both analytics and coding (1 hour)

• Final stage behaviour based culture interview (60 mins)

• We’ll let you know if you’re invited to an interview or not. But, as a small team with a lot of applications to consider, we can’t give personal feedback on each application
