This role involves a 4-month contract with a local authority, offering a rate of £40.15 per hour under an umbrella arrangement. The primary purpose is to assist the HM Senior Coroner, Area Coroners, and Assistant Coroners in executing their legal responsibilities. This includes managing investigations into deaths that are sudden, violent, unnatural, unexplained, or occur in custody or state detention, requiring a coronial inquiry.
Responsibilities
Oversee a personal portfolio of coronial investigations and inquests, handling complex and sensitive cases such as child fatalities, homicides, suicides, road traffic deaths, and deaths in custody.
Conduct thorough investigations and collect evidence to aid coronial decision-making, including securing witness statements, medical documentation, reports, and social histories.
Present investigative findings and recommendations to the Coroner to support informed judicial decisions.
Advance investigations and execute judicial directives as issued by the Coroner.
Escalate urgent, intricate, or high-risk issues to the Coroner or Lead Coronial Officer when necessary.
Coordinate post-mortem examinations, including invasive procedures and CT scans, ensuring pathologists have all pertinent case details.
Investigate potential Treasure reports in line with coronial guidelines.
Manage disclosure processes in accordance with Coroner instructions and legal standards.
Handle the transfer of investigations, disposal documentation, repatriation issues, and other statutory procedures.
Requirements
Extensive experience within a Coroner's Service or a similar investigative setting.
Proven ability to manage and advance complex casework involving sensitive and distressing situations.
Experience in interacting with bereaved families and vulnerable individuals with empathy and professionalism.
Essential Qualifications
A-Level education or equivalent experience in a relevant field.
Professional training or certification related to coronial services, investigations, criminal justice, public administration, or legal services, or equivalent demonstrable experience.
Evidence of ongoing professional development pertinent to the role.

Working hours: 36 hours per week
Location: Camley Street, London, Camden, N1C 4PP, United Kingdom
Payment schedule: Bi-weekly
