Role Overview

We are looking for a Senior Data Scientist to deliver high-impact analytical work across Oxford Nanopore. Working closely with stakeholders across multiple business functions, you will understand and define business requirements, identify where data and analytics can have the greatest impact, and translate these into prioritised analytical initiatives. You will own the planning and delivery of analytics work end-to-end, ensuring solutions address the underlying business need and deliver measurable value.

Key Responsibilities:

• Partner with stakeholders across multiple business units to understand business challenges, opportunities and decision-making needs, translating these into clearly defined analytical requirements and measurable outcomes.
• Own the planning and end-to-end delivery of analytics and data science initiatives, from initial discovery and requirements definition through analysis, implementation and impact assessment.
• Assess the potential business impact, value and urgency of analytical opportunities and use this to prioritise work effectively across competing requirements.
• Manage analytical initiatives spanning multiple business units, aligning stakeholders around scope, priorities, dependencies, timelines and expected outcomes.
• Develop robust analyses and data science solutions using Python, SQL, statistical methods and other appropriate analytical techniques.
• Select analytical approaches appropriate to the business problem, balancing sophistication, available data, delivery effort and expected value.
• Translate complex analysis into clear insights, recommendations and actions for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Define measures of success and evaluate the impact of delivered analytics, using evidence to understand whether solutions have achieved the intended business outcomes and to inform future priorities.
• Proactively identify opportunities where data and analytics can improve business performance, operational efficiency and decision-making.
• Work closely with Data Engineering and other technical teams to ensure analytical solutions are supported by reliable, scalable data and infrastructure.

• Contribute to analytical standards, reusable approaches and best practices across the wider data organisation.

   

Qualifications/Experience:

• Strong experience delivering analytics or data science work that addresses complex, real-world business problems.
• Demonstrable experience working directly with stakeholders to understand requirements, challenge assumptions and translate ambiguous business problems into clearly defined analytical work.
• Experience owning analytical initiatives from problem definition through delivery, implementation and assessment of impact.
• Experience planning and coordinating analytical work involving multiple stakeholders, teams or business functions.
• Strong judgement in assessing potential business value and prioritising competing analytical opportunities.
• Strong Python and SQL skills, with experience analysing and interpreting complex datasets.
• Strong statistical and analytical reasoning, with the ability to select appropriate techniques based on the problem being solved.
• Ability to communicate complex analysis clearly and translate findings into actionable recommendations for non-technical audiences.
• Experience applying techniques such as statistical modelling, forecasting, experimentation, optimisation or machine learning would be advantageous.
• Experience with data visualisation and BI tools such as Tableau, PowerBI, or Spotfire would be beneficial.
• Experience working with Data Engineering teams, modern data platforms or delivering analytical solutions into operational environments would be advantageous.

• Degree-level education in a numerate, scientific, technical or analytical discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
