Initially this will be a highly hands-on electrical design position to ensure consistency and accuracy to support the manufacturing process. You will take a lead role in the design of electrical control systems, working closely with the company's manufacturing operation and top leadership. The longer-term opportunity is considerably broader. As you establish yourself within the business, the intention is for you to take increasing ownership of the engineering function to free the founder to focus on strategy and R&D. You will forge the engineering standards, processes and people including recruiting your team around you. For an accomplished electrical design engineer / senior electrical design engineer who would like to progress into engineering leadership without giving up the technical work immediately, this offers a fantastic opportunity to do so, working in a family owned business directly with the CEO and founder. The role Initially, the majority of your time will be spent on electrical design, including: Electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and control panel layouts Design and specification of electrical control systems Producing and maintaining BOMs, drawings and associated technical documentation Reviewing designs and ensuring appropriate engineering standards are maintained Working closely with Manufacturing to ensure designs are practical, accurate and efficient to build Liaising with R&D, Purchasing and other functions throughout the design and manufacturing process Identifying opportunities to improve engineering methods, standards and documentation As the role develops, you will take greater responsibility for the engineering function itself, including supporting and mentoring other engineers, building out your team and establishing effective engineering processes and standards. About you We are looking for a Senior Electrical Design Engineer with a strong background in industrial controls. You are likely to have: HNC/HND or Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or equivalent experience Strong experience designing industrial electrical control systems Excellent electrical schematic, wiring diagram and control panel design capability Experience working in an engineering/manufacturing environment where your designs ultimately become physical products Good understanding of electrical components and their application within control systems Experience using an electrical CAD package such as SolidWorks Electrical, EPLAN or AutoCAD Electrical The confidence to take ownership of technical decisions and contribute ideas for improving the engineering function Experience with PLC-controlled equipment would be useful, although this is primarily an electrical design rather than PLC programming position. Previous leadership experience isn't essential. You may already mentor or support less experienced engineers, or simply be at the point in your career where you are ready to take on greater technical and organisational responsibility. Relevant backgrounds could include industrial automation, special-purpose machinery, material handling/conveyors, process equipment, food & beverage, water, HVAC or other controls-led manufacturing environments. The opportunity The company is a successful, privately owned UK manufacturer which designs and builds its products from its Northamptonshire facility. This appointment forms part of a wider investment in its engineering capability. Initially, the priority is to bring in an excellent hands-on designer who can establish credibility through their technical contribution. Longer term, the intention is to build additional engineering capability around the successful person and for the position to evolve from senior electrical design engineer towards a management role and potentially Head of Engineering. The environment will suit someone who is technically confident, pragmatic and comfortable working closely with senior management. You should be prepared to contribute your own ideas, question existing approaches where appropriate and make a genuine contribution to how engineering develops within the business. Salary: £55,000–£65,000 depending on experience Location: Daventry, Northamptonshire – site based Employment: Permanent, full time Daventry is commutable from Northampton, Rugby, Coventry, Banbury, Towcester, Brackley and surrounding areas.
