The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly skilled Senior Electrical Engineer to join a critical aviation infrastructure maintenance programme at one of the world's busiest airports. Working within a specialist engineering environment, the successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the safe, reliable, and compliant operation of aviation fuel distribution and hydrant systems across Heathrow Airport.

This position offers the chance to work on complex engineering challenges within a highly regulated industry, contributing directly to the maintenance, safety, and continuous improvement of essential airport infrastructure.

Role Overview

The Senior Electrical Engineer will be responsible for supporting and enhancing electrical maintenance activities across a large-scale aviation fuel network. Working closely with site teams and key stakeholders, they will develop maintenance procedures, review existing processes, identify areas for improvement, and ensure compliance with industry regulations and best practice.

The successful candidate will bring strong technical expertise, a safety-first mindset, and the ability to influence and collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and implement Electrical Maintenance Procedures, Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) schedules, and Risk Assessments across operational sites.
Collaborate with site-based engineering and maintenance teams to drive continuous improvement in maintenance performance and reliability.
Identify gaps in existing maintenance strategies and support the development of effective solutions and improvement plans.
Provide specialist electrical engineering advice to support operational and maintenance activities.
Ensure compliance with relevant electrical regulations, industry standards, and aviation-specific requirements.
Support asset integrity, reliability, and lifecycle management initiatives.
Promote a strong safety culture, ensuring all engineering activities are carried out in accordance with health, safety, and environmental requirements.
Engage with internal and external stakeholders to deliver successful maintenance and engineering outcomes.

Required Qualifications

Degree qualified in Electrical, Electronic, Control Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
Relevant technical apprenticeship with substantial industry experience may also be considered.
Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status, or demonstrable progress towards professional registration.
Membership of a recognised professional engineering institution is desirable.

Technical Experience & Knowledge

The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of electrical engineering principles within high-hazard or highly regulated industries, ideally aviation, fuels, petrochemical, or related sectors.

Key areas of expertise include:

Electrical design, installation, maintenance, and operational best practices.
Aviation fuel systems and associated industry standards.
Experience with JIG (Joint Inspection Group) Standards relating to aviation fuel quality control, airport depots, and hydrant operations.
Knowledge of Energy Institute (EI) guidance and technical standards for aviation fuel handling.
Strong understanding of BS 7671 Wiring Regulations and electrical inspection and testing requirements.
Experience with hazardous area classification and installation requirements under ATEX, DSEAR, and CompEx environments.
Knowledge of bonding, earthing, and static electricity control measures associated with fuel transfer operations.
Understanding of cathodic protection systems and associated industry guidance.
Familiarity with UK legislation, engineering standards, and regulatory compliance requirements.
Experience delivering projects involving:
ATEX Compliance
Pressure Equipment Directive (PED)
Low Voltage Directive
Machinery Directive
EMC Compliance
CE/UKCA Marking Requirements
Strong awareness of engineering risk management, asset integrity, and HSE legislation.
Typically 5-10+ years of engineering experience within aviation, fuel infrastructure, energy, utilities, process, or similarly regulated sectors.
