We're supporting an established engineering and technology business looking to strengthen its product development capability with the appointment of an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer.
This is an opportunity to join a business with a strong engineering heritage, working on technically challenging products where innovation, reliability and quality are central to the design process. They're looking for a technically capable, hands-on engineer who enjoys solving complex design challenges and taking ownership of projects from initial concept through to manufacture.
Alongside the technical responsibilities, you'll have the opportunity to contribute to product development, influence engineering decisions and support the continued development of a collaborative engineering team.
What you'll be doing
Leading mechanical design projects from initial concept through to production
Designing and developing mechanical components, enclosures and assemblies for specialist electronic equipment
Creating robust, reliable and cost-effective mechanical solutions
Producing detailed 3D models, manufacturing drawings, assembly documentation and technical specifications
Applying Design for Manufacture (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles throughout the design process
Developing mechanical solutions that consider thermal performance, environmental protection, reliability and product quality
Collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams, manufacturing departments and external suppliers
Supporting the transition of new products from development into manufacturing
Identifying opportunities to improve design efficiency, manufacturing processes and product performance
Providing technical input into project planning, design estimates and cost management
Investigating and resolving engineering challenges during product development and production
Supporting and mentoring junior engineers
Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives across the engineering function
What we're looking for
Strong experience within Mechanical Design Engineering, ideally in a senior or technically responsible position
Background designing electronic equipment, mechanical enclosures, chassis or electromechanical assemblies
Strong understanding of Design for Manufacture (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA)
Experience managing mechanical designs through the full product development lifecycle
Proficiency in 3D CAD design and producing detailed manufacturing drawings
Good understanding of mechanical manufacturing processes and material selection
Experience considering thermal management, environmental protection and mechanical reliability within product design
Ability to develop practical, cost-effective engineering solutions
Experience collaborating with manufacturing teams, suppliers and other engineering disciplines
Strong analytical and technical problem-solving skills
Confidence taking ownership of complex design challenges and influencing technical decisions
Excellent communication and organisational skills
Ability to work independently while contributing to a wider engineering team
Desirable experience
Previous experience within Electronics, Defence, Aerospace, Telecommunications, RF Technology or other high-technology engineering industries
Experience designing mechanical equipment for harsh or demanding operating environments
Knowledge of sheet metal fabrication, precision machining, moulded plastics or injection moulding
Experience with Bill of Materials (BOM) management and product configuration
Familiarity with Product Data Management (PDM) systems
Understanding of Engineering Change Notices (ECN) and Change Request (CR) processes
Experience reviewing engineering test data and product performance
Experience supporting or mentoring junior engineers
Professional engineering registration or working towards Chartership
