IONATE is a deep tech scale-up building the hardware and software backbone for smart grids. Our mission is to transform power systems - from grids and microgrids to renewables and data centres - unlocking the massive potential in this under-innovated sector that touches every aspect of our modern lives.
Requiring knowledge in designing, developing, and testing control algorithms, this position will involve working alongside the Power Control Engineering team as well as engineers in other disciplines. You will play a key role in developing and implementing control algorithms, taking concepts and prototypes through to commercial product for customers.
You will be active in initiating analyses, design reviews, technical discussions, verification, and validation and will have an innovative approach to engineering reasoning. Importantly, your work will include supporting project and test activities and help to ensure that these are completed within schedule and budget.
What you will do:
Research, design and develop innovative control strategies contributing to the development of cutting-edge IONATE technologies
Developing models and conducting simulation studies during the product development lifecycle
Develop and execute standardised test plans, including hands-on lab testing activities for the evaluation of prototype systems and final products
Analyse and troubleshoot software/hardware and system level problems as they arise during the testing activities by proposing effective technical solutions
Analyse operational test data to assess system performance
Communicate complex technical solutions effectively with peers and non-engineering colleagues
Actively participate in technical development and testing across a multi-disciplinary team including transformer designers, power electronics and embedded engineers, control, safety and grid integration engineers and SW specialists
Create and maintain technical documentation.
Requirements
What you will need:
A degree in Electronics and Electrical and/or Information/Control Engineering
Proven experience developing control algorithms for Power Electronics, Grid-connected inverter or Motor Controllers
Strong knowledge of classical control theory, linear, nonlinear, model predictive control systems, control stability analysis, state space modelling, modulation techniques
Capability to read and understand complex scientific literature and ability to implement proposed solutions
MATLAB/Simulink proficiency ideally with model-based design experience and fundamentals in C/C++/C#/Python development for real time applications
Experience in DSP and filtering techniques
Experience working in a lab environment using power converters, power sources, loads, signal generators, oscilloscopes etc.
An ability to work collaboratively on projects with ambitious product targets
Flexibility to travel to our London office in Hammersmith 3-5 days per week (depending on requirements)
Good written and verbal communication skills; ready to work with multiple customers across the globe.
It would be useful to have:
Knowledge in embedded systems for real time control applications
Knowledge of utility grid interconnection standards, such as IEC/IEEE standards and international grid codes is desirable
Willingness to, at times, travel nationally for testing and commissioning (around 10% annually).
