Transgenic Technologies – Dr Douglas Strathdee

About us

The CRUK Scotland Institute is a cancer research institute, situated in Glasgow with approximately 250 researchers split across 30 research groups consisting of PIs, postdoctoral scientists, PhD students and scientific officers. It is one of Europe's leading cancer research centres, supporting cutting-edge work into the molecular mechanisms of cancer development. As well as core support from Cancer Research UK, the Institute also receives an additional third of its total income from external grants and industry collaborations. It has an excellent reputation for fundamental cancer research, including world-class metabolism studies and renowned in vivo modelling of tumour growth and metastasis. Its research ethos is about excellence, honesty, openness, accountability and integrity.

Position outline

We currently have a vacancy for a Senior Scientific Officer in our Transgenic Technologies team. The primary role of this position will be to support state-of the-art creation of genetically engineered in vivo cancer models designed for discovery research.

You will be expected to work as part of a team, assisting and conducting procedures required for the generation of new transgenic models. This is primarily achieved by the application of a variety of embryo manipulation techniques including microinjection, cryopreservation and in vitro fertilisation. Other duties include colony management for the support of transgenic projects, cell culture, molecular biology, genotyping and importation of cryopreserved materials for rederivation.

You should be able to work both independently and in close collaboration with the scientists and technicians associated with the transgenic projects. You should be highly motivated and have good communication, project management and organisational skills. A flexible approach to your working pattern is necessary as there may be some weekend work required as part of this role.

You will possess a Bachelors or Masters degree in molecular genetics or similar and have a good understanding of the molecular genetic techniques underlying gene targeting and genome editing. Previous experience of pre-implantation embryo handling and microinjection would be a significant advantage, however, we can provide the necessary training for candidates who can demonstrate some lab experience, great attention to detail and capability performing very intricate procedures. You should also possess excellent troubleshooting, planning/organisational capability and have a relevant scientific background. For informal enquiries, please email Dr Douglas Strathdee.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Our overarching research ethos at the Institute is about excellence, honesty, openness, accountability and integrity. The diversity of our staff and students is also what makes the Institute such a vibrant place to work and advance discoveries in cancer research. Family friendly policies, our collaborative ethos, a focus on good mental health and well-being and opportunities for all help to create an enjoyable and inclusive workplace where your voice matters.
