Job Description - Senior Technical Artist - Freelance

Magnopus is looking for a Senior Technical Artist with deep Unreal Engine expertise to join our UK team as a freelancer on an exciting ongoing project.

Working closely with our creative and art teams, you'll help deliver high-quality real-time content in Unreal Engine, with a particular focus on performance optimisation, materials, content pipelines and technical art workflows. You'll play a key role in helping the team achieve the required visual quality while ensuring content meets demanding real-time performance targets.

This is a 3-month freelance opportunity.

What you'll do

  • Help develop and optimise real-time environments and assets, from initial content through to polished, performant scenes.

  • Work directly within Unreal Engine to provide technical support and guidance to the art team, helping troubleshoot and resolve content and performance challenges.

  • Profile and optimise 3D content, materials and environments to meet required real-time performance metrics.

  • Create, profile and optimise materials in Unreal Engine, balancing visual quality with real-time performance requirements.

  • Identify opportunities to improve and optimise existing art and content pipelines, helping the wider team work more efficiently and consistently.

  • Build and work with Unreal's PCG graphs to support efficient content creation and procedural environment workflows.

What will help you succeed in this role

  • Proven experience as a Senior 3D Technical Artist, with a strong track record working in Unreal Engine.

  • Deep understanding of Unreal Engine material creation, profiling and optimisation.

  • Strong knowledge of real-time 3D performance optimisation, including LODs, asset optimisation, draw calls, shader/material performance and profiling workflows.

  • Experience working with PCG graphs and procedural content workflows in Unreal Engine.

  • Professional experience delivering real-time content for games, immersive experiences, virtual production or similar projects.

  • A strong artistic eye, with the ability to balance visual quality, composition and creative intent with technical and performance requirements.

  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills, with the ability to work closely with an art team and provide practical technical guidance.

Even better if you also have

  • Experience optimising large-scale environments or complex real-time scenes.

  • Familiarity with standard DCC packages such as Maya, 3ds Max or Blender.

  • Experience with Substance Painter, Substance Designer or Photoshop.

  • Experience with Unreal Engine's Sequencer, cameras, lighting and environment workflows.

  • Experience working with PCG at scale.
